Sons of Anarchy 3.2 'Oiled'

“It’s gonna get a lot worse before it gets better…” – Jax

After last week’s somewhat slow-burning premiere, episode two of Sons of Anarchy’s third season was a lot faster paced. There was a hell of a lot going on in ‘Oiled’ and quite a bit of information to consume and digest, but what a great episode it was.

The long-running arcs all ticked away nicely but ‘Oiled’ certainly felt a lot more like early Sons of Anarchy, even with quite a lot of Belfast action included, as the club got involved in a few plots away from Abel’s kidnapping.

The humour that has, necessarily, been missing in the last few episodes of the show was also back with a vengeance, with some of the most quotable lines in the show’s history, a selection of my favourites you’ll find below:

“…A little bit of lube’s just the humane thing to do” - Tig

“Damn hybrids… Dangerous” - Juice

“I don’t recognise your bullshit MC”. – Clay

Out of context they may not seem all that, but genuinely, ‘Oiled’ is one of the most humorous episodes Sons of Anarchy has done in quite some time.

‘Oiled’ saw the Sons first forced to help Bobby’s ex’s current squeeze, a bounty hunter, track down one of his bounties in return for him then helping track Cameron, who the Sons believe to still be in the country.

Then the club had to address the little issue of the drive-by aimed at them that killed Hale in the premiere. Using the, always good for some comic relief, Chucky to distract the cop guarding him, the club discovered him to be part of a Mayan affiliate gang and deduced that the hit was an initiation as Alvarez and the Mayans tried to patch over the newbies to continue trying to push the heroin they had got into with Zobelle last season.

This led to the Sons tracking down Salazar (a common TV name for a South American villain) the leader of the Calaveras MC and beating him and then torturing him in to giving up Alvarez’s plans.

With another Mayan war the last thing the club need at the moment, rather than killing their captive, the Sons agree to let him go in order to hopefully leave negotiating with Alvarez as a viable option.

The scenes here, first the beating and then the torturing of Salazar, allowed Clay to continue to try and mould the vulnerable Jax in to his puppet, something which Bobby has clearly noticed. When Clay immediately lets Jax have first crack at Salazar in “the hole” (more on that later) Bobby calls him on it asking what he’s doing, to which Clay responds “I’m helping him through it”, something he clearly believes but obviously has ulterior motives for too.

So it would seem that in addition to hunting Jax’s missing son, the club is about to have some big problems closer to home, meaning the opening quote from Jax, uttered at the start of the episode, couldn’t have been more prophetic.

Though with the bounty hunter finding evidence of Cameron, with Abel, in Vancouver it seems as though Abel will be taking precedence for the club, for the time being at least.

Away from SAMCRO, things expectedly took a turn for the worse up with Gemma’s Father as Tig took it upon himself to show Nate’s live-in carer just how “big” of a man he was only to take a bullet from the old-timer for his troubles.

Gemma’s Father’s mind might be rapidly deteriorating but the Guatemalan carer was pretty sharp in working out that Gemma’s a wanted lady and made moves to try and turn her in for the $25,000 reward on offer. However smart she may have been in working out Gemma’s fugitive status, she wasn’t smart enough to not underestimate Mrs. Teller-Morrow and now finds herself staring down the barrel of a gun.

Over in Belfast, we met Father Ashby who in spite of being a priest also acts as a key figure in the IRA and organised the council in order to deal with Cameron.

This led to the culminating scene of Abel’s kidnapper being strangled to death in church and Ashby ordering a very public display of his body, something Jimmy O had strongly argued against. Obviously this is a hint at dissension within the Irish ranks, but knowing so little about Ashby and still not really knowing all that much about Jimmy, it kind of failed to strike too much of a tension-building blow, at least with me anyway.

Knowing the sometimes beat you over the head symbolism the show often uses I was a little surprised we didn’t have Cameron’s blood splattering on to a crucifix or something as he was killed, needless to say though when news of his very public death does eventually, and inevitably, reach Charming a trip across the Atlantic will be beckoning for SAMCRO.

A Hail of Bullets:

- Seeing Jax start the episode in jail was at least an attempt to vindicate the Charming PD as not completely useless – they at least managed to stop standing around long enough to actually arrest him. Yet in spite of putting a major beating on the only suspect in the Deputy Chief’s murder, he was still out the next morning.

- Tig’s fear of dolls was again raised here, last season we saw him freaking out as he got high up at the Native American reservation and encountered a bunch of dolls – I’d put that down to the drugs, but at Nate’s he appeared to be completely lucid and still commented that they were freaking him out.

- Opie getting distracted by seeing Lyla on the cover of the porn film seemed to indicate that although he’s made peace with his old lady being in that profession, he’s still not totally comfortable with it.

- “The hole” was a pretty brutal means of extracting information from Salazar, but it certainly looked visually impressive as the two bikes narrowly missed his head. If being buried up to your neck and almost having a bike driven in to your head is the punishment for crossing them, I’d definitely be trying to stay on SAMCRO’s good side.

Supernatural - Does Fan Reaction Impact the Writing?

"Supernatural" fans are amongst the most vocal on Zap2it, so when we had the opportunity to talk to executive producer Sera Gamble and consulting producer Ben Edlund at San Diego Comic-Con, we had to ask them about how fan reactions impact their storytelling process.

"It's hard not to read it," Edlund says of the fans' online rants and raves. "You're in a dialog. It's an amazing thing that the internet gives you this chance of seeing what people think... so we definitely take it in."

He says that just as fans respond to the material, he hopes that the material also responds to the fans. "Like any dialog, we're in that conversation. It gives us an indication of what viewer expectation is and that helps us play tension against viewer expectation. We want to scare people and surprise them and make them worried, so it tells us where the zeitgeist is moving so we can do a counter-move or move along with it."

Supernatural - Episode 7.01 - Meet the New Boss - Scene Descriptions

There were five different scenes scheduled for today. The first two were exterior shots with Castiel among the 12 dead or fallen Angels.
He is speaking and the steady cam along with the crane camera were getting tight shots and wide shots.

He has a lot of dialogue and the description on the Angles is they are dead with charred outlines on their wings on the grass.
Castiel says " It's a new day. On Earth and in heaven. Rejoice".

So it is pretty clear that Castiel is God.

The crew moves into the Mansion which is a huge beautiful building called Aberthau. It belongs to the Point Grey Community Center.

Sam, Dean and Bobby get into the house and look for an act of God. They find the owners of the house and come face to face with a shot gun. Dean ever so cool says "hi".

Cut to
Sam and Bobby enter the study and find Dean tying up the elderly home owners.
Then a bunch of stuff happens and then Dean copies a sigil and they cut Sam's arm for some drops of blood and add a bunch of stuff to a pestal and mash it up all the while Bobby is speaking Latin while mixing up the spell. "Te nunc invocco, Mortem".

Then guess who appears?
Yup, the really bad guy (Death) but he is bound. Dean gives him a bag of take -out and says , "Fried Pickle Chip? Best in the state".
Then some more bad stuff happens and they get into trouble and there is dialogue and end of day.

Sounds exciting right? All that took place inside the Mansion so I only saw what was outside.
Sam, Dean and Bobby were on location all afternoon. They will continue at the Mansion on Thursday and move to another location on Friday. The team is heading to ComicCon on Saturday at some point.

I really hope to find more sets in the future and take better pictures of Jared and Jensen. Misha and Jim are sweethearts. They don't have a bodyguard to ensure the boys aren't photographed. It is hard to get great shots because they are driven up to the doors of sets and don't walk anywhere.

Sons of Anarchy Season 4 Premiere Date

It’s been a Sons of Anarchy heavy week this week with the UK premiere of season 3 last night but US fans can also rejoice now as well because FX have finally announced the premiere date for season 4.

Season 4 will begin in the States on 6th September and will kick-off with a 90-minute opener reintroducing SAMCRO to the world after their exploits in Ireland and then in jail following season 3’s conclusion.

The latest casting news for the show can be found here and below you can watch the latest teaser trailer for the new season.

Sons of Anarchy 3.1 'So'

“Every time I think maybe I’m heading in the right direction, I end up in a place I never even knew could feel this bad…” - Jax

After what seems like an eternity, the great Sons of Anarchy returned to UK screens last night for its third season, and things are as complicated as ever in the world of SAMCRO.

If you were coming in to season 3 as a newcomer, ‘So’ was probably a bit of a tough watch – the slow, methodical pacing of the episode didn’t make for an instantly gripping episode. But for long-term fans of the show it immediately felt like the Sons had never been away, and as an audience we too felt what the characters tortured by recent events were going through.

There was a darkness cast over Charming by the events of the season 2 finale and this meant that this premiere was an emotional powder keg just waiting to ignite, and ignite it did in those final few moments, but I’m getting ahead of myself.

'So' began with a lengthy recap of the season 2 events that culminated in Jax’s baby son Abel being kidnapped and club prospect ‘Half-Sack’ lying murdered on Jax’s kitchen floor. Watching this back it reminded me just how culpable for it all Stahl was, I’d forgot how her actions had triggered the whole domino effect of that finale, and so for the second season running the terrible events that befell SAMCRO were thanks to the twisted ATF bitch.

The opening montage was a good way of transitioning from that recap in to all the major characters’ reactions to events, the most vivid image being poor Tara sat alone in the kitchen with Sack’s blood still staining the floor.

Before the opening credits even roll then we have the new order of the upcoming season pretty much established: Gemma on the lam and unaware of her grandson’s abduction, Jax a broken man unable to seemingly feel anything other than numbness and Clay and Tara isolated from their respective partners, one literally and one figuratively.

With Jax apparently having been in a daze since the abduction, it took some sort of lead on Abel’s whereabouts to get him up, dressed and back out in to the world that still exists for him even without his son.

Finally having him lucid allowed Tara the opportunity to try and converse with her live-in lover but he only used the moment to try and drive her away. Jax wasn’t acting out of callousness though, he clearly still loves Tara like he always has, but he is now almost passionate in his attempts to keep her away from the life he has and has no choice but to keep enduring. Whilst Jax may not have the opportunity to walk away, he believes Tara can do just that, and in his own twisted way is trying to save her, as well as no doubt punishing himself for Abel’s plight.

The fact is though that Tara is deeper in to the club now than ever before and just like Jax it’s going to be nigh-on impossible for her to just get out.

I thought it was a nice touch that after their little talk that it was the rev of the bike engine that set Tara off in to her little freak-out when she smashed up the nursery, how much easier would all their lives be if that sound didn’t exist?

Charlie Hunnam and Maggie Siff were exemplary as always in this episode, and they really brought rawness to the visceral nature of their situation. Hunnam in particular looked suitably worn out throughout the episode and managed to convey more than a thousand words could with a simple broken look.

Case in point would be the way Jax diffused the stand-off with the gang with just a few words explaining what he was going through, within a second of him speaking the gang leader ordered weapons lowered; obviously sensing this is a man enduring the sort of primal trauma no man should be subjected to.

The shot of Jax sat at his Father’s grave was about the most poignant of the episode, and there were a few contenders for that title, with the ‘SO’ part (the episode’s title) of his Sons rings set atop the grave. Jax seemingly torn between the club and his family, as exemplified metaphorically by that dividing of the rings and then verbally in his exchange with Piney just after.

Whilst Clay does undoubtedly want his step-grandson back and feels Jax’s pain, the SAMCRO president is clearly using events to manipulate Jax and mould him in to the man he has always pushed him to be, at the same time quashing any lingering remnants of the beef that ran through most of season 2. If Gemma’s revelation of her rape put a temporary stop to things last season, Abel’s kidnapping has now seemingly erased it from history completely.

The look on Piney’s face at the wake as his eyes met Jax’s seemed to indicate that he could see what Clay was doing. More and more it seems like Clay and Piney are the devil and angel on Jax’s shoulders, with Piney pushing Jax to embrace everything his old man did and be more like his Father and Clay trying to make sure that John Teller or a version of him never comes back to change SAMCRO.

Whether Jax is too blinded by the loss of his son to see through Clay’s machinations or whether he was releasing all the stored up rage over Abel’s kidnapping, Clay’s words at the wake coupled with the sight of the young boy bleeding to death after catching a bullet in the drive-by (obviously striking a chord with him) pushed Jax over the edge as he beat the only shooter caught during the attack half to death in front of most of Charming.

Speaking of that episode-closing drive-by it was the last we will see of Deputy Hale as he was brutally run down and killed as the shooters made their getaway. It was a bit of an unceremonious ending for a character that’s been on the show from day one and somewhat of a surprising one given that he has always been a thorn in SAMCRO’s side and was just about to finally get in to a position to step up his dogged pursuit.

I suppose though with Stahl now the major law enforcement antagonist to the club and with another Hale also gunning for SAMCRO, David was sort of lost in the shuffle.

Speaking of the elder Hale brother, Jacob’s run for Mayor against club-friendly Oswald will no doubt be a long-running thread for the season. Jacob will surely now blame SAMCRO for David’s death and I wouldn’t be surprised to see him run on a campaign of ridding Charming of this sort of violence. So even though one Hale is now gone, another is sure to continue to cause problems for SAMCRO.

All the above is of course occurring in the absence of club matriarch Gemma as she hides out in Tig’s protection, still wanted for the murders of Edmond and Polly.

In spite of how dumb it is for her to be at her Dad’s – surely if she was that high on the wanted fugitive list her family would be the first place those hunting her looked – this storyline will at least give the brilliant Katey Sagal something to work with rather than simply sitting in a dingy motel room.

Although that said, she did make the most of the motel-based scenes. Of course we all know Gemma would be able to hot-wire a car but it was still pretty cool to see her doing it, she has to be one of the strongest female characters on television.

And then she stabbed the car owner in the leg with her knife when he caught her; at first I thought she’d just punched him the balls, but no she’d, as Tig so eloquently put it, “almost cut his joint off” to which Gemma hilariously replied that it was “just a flesh wound”.

I don’t know how much mileage will be in the Gemma plot threads until they start to be no more than an annoying detour from club business and the hunt for Abel, but Sagal and the great Hal Holbrook, as long as he sticks around, together can produce nothing but gold right?

‘So’ was a strong premiere by all accounts, the aftermath of season 2 was dealt with and how that would shape season 3 was established as well as setting up several ongoing arcs for the rest of the season. To do all this of course meant that the episode had a methodical feel to it but it was no less compelling for it and was punctuated by a fantastic closing few minutes that really amplified everything that had preceded them.

A Hail of Bullets:

– Okay, so I know they’ve just seen their soon to be boss run over and dragged along the pavement, mashing his head up and killing him, but how useless as the Charming PD!?

They had guns trained on the shooter that fell from the van, yet did nothing as Jax brushed them aside and beat the guy’s head against the ground repeatedly. They’re stood right next to him yet it took the rest of the club to finally pull Jax away.

Maybe this was a commentary on the kind of apathy Unser’s control of the force has bred and how Hale’s death now means this will continue, either way though you still think they’d have at least tried to stop Jax trying to kill their only suspect.

- I enjoyed a couple of the references to Half-Sack as he was remembered at his wake – Kozik, who it would seem will be returning to Charming to pad out SAMCRO’s thinning ranks, commenting that he “liked that little guy” and then Clay commenting that Sack had “made it through Iraqi minefields only to get taken out in a god damn kitchen.”

- Another great line from Clay, who had a bunch last night, including his “thanks Mr. Magoo”, was when his threat to Stahl: “I’m gonna shove a gun barrel up that bony ass of yours and I’m gonna blow your black heart out”.

Speaking of Stahl, she certainly is despicable, Tara had that right. It’s almost like she’s now started to believe her own lies about Gemma; as Tara also rightly questioned, how she still has a badge after all her fuck-ups I have no earthly idea.

- I thought it was a nice call-back to last season to have that lingering shot of Zobelle’s cigar store all boarded up as SAMCRO rode past on the way to Jax’s house.

- Great musical choices throughout by Kurt Sutter again as always, especially the closing ‘Dad’s Gonna Kill Me’ by Richard Thompson. A song so dripping with symbolism in relation to this show it’d take me a month to pick through it all.

- I loved Half-Sack’s SAMCRO coffin. I wonder who they got to make that up for them – do SAMCRO have a coffin-maker on the pay roll?

Comic-Con 2011: 'Supernatural's' Jared Padalecki on His Love of Boba Fett and 'The Little Show That Could'

"I always wanted to be a bounty hunter," the actor says of his "irrational childhood love" of the "Star Wars" character.

Jared Padalecki
Geek Cred:
Supernatural, Friday the 13th, House of Wax

Comic-Con panel: Supernatural, Sunday, July 24, 11:15-12:15 p.m., Hall H

THR: What were your first impressions of Comic-Con?
Padalecki:
I’m a total sci-fi/fantasy/comic book geek; I collected comic books growing up; I’ve got every Star Wars incarnation of the trilogy; and I’ve read all the Lord of the Rings books and have a tattoo – I’m just kidding about that! – I was digging through my brother’s wallet and saw one of his passwords was Gandalf, and I teased him about it but I’ve done the same thing.
THR: What stands out from your first Comic-Con?
Padalecki:
We lovingly call ourselves The Little Show That Could because we have always been up against big heavy-hitting. We always knew we had a loyal following but I had no idea how loyal it was. I remember being onstage and seeing people standing up in the back of the auditorium and then looking at the front row and seeing [Warner Bros. Television CEO] Peter Roth sitting there looking around with a look on his face that he didn’t realize how huge the fan base was.
THR: What’s the best thing a fan has said to you at Comic-Con?
Padalecki:
Jensen and I have started going to conventions and meeting lots of fans worldwide. What amazes me every time I hear it is that the show has gotten them through hard times and that they have connected with my character, Sam Winchester, and been strengthened and emboldened by his courage in the face of overwhelming obstacles. That always means a lot. Sam Winchester, MD, JD, CPA, FBI – everything depending on the episode!

THR: What panel would you stand in line all day for?
Padalecki:
I’m a big Star Wars fan and grew up watching the movies. I read all the books and have read Star Wars fiction that went between the newest trilogy and the original trilogy and it was part of my childhood. I’d love to see George Lucas’ take on the last three decades of fandom that he largely inspired. So Lucas and all the producers from the original Star Wars movies.
THR: What questions would you recommend fans not ask?
Padalecki:
Once I was asked why Sam was wearing a lot of yellow and how it impacted his character’s direction. It gives me more confidence as an actor that people notice all these little nuances. Those questions are OK, but personal questions about my wife and what kind of underwear I’m wearing are off limits.
THR: What tips do you recommend to have a successful panel?
Padalecki:
I’m a sucker for gag reels and teaser trailers for new seasons. One of the great parts of panels, especially on a show like Supernatural, which can be so dark, it’s fun to get up there and laugh and remember we’re only telling a story. Seeing Eric Kripke and Ben Edlund up there being so funny always makes me laugh.
THR: What advice do you have for Comic-Con first-timers?
Padalecki:
Plan out a schedule; if you haven’t been there yet, it’s enormous. It’s like going to a museum: I know I want to see the Mona Lisa, Joan of Arc, the Statue of Michael, break! Knock out what you want to see because you will get sidetracked. Make a plan and be flexible.
THR: If you were to attend in costume, what would it be?
Padalecki:
Boba Fett. I’m in San Antonio sitting in my bedroom that I grew up in and I have four Boba Fetts in here (pictured). I have an irrational childhood love of Boba Fett. (Laughs.) Ever since I watched the movie, I always wanted to be a bounty hunter; it sounded so cool to me as a child. I always remember the scene where Han Solo is dying and I just got the sense that Boba Fett was just really cool. I always wanted to dress up as him. And he had that great rocket on his back. That must be it, I always loved the Rocketeer, too!
THR: Season 7, Sam faces a foe unlike anything before. What can you tease?
Padalecki:
I’ve seen the episode that Jensen Ackles is directing, which is the first one we’re shooting and I’ve seen the season opener. We have to go big or go home and Supernatural has a tendency to go big and badder and this season the foe will be bigger than Armageddon, bigger than the apocalypse, bigger than Lucifer and bigger than God. Although I don’t know what that could possibly be, but I’m looking forward to finding out. If it could be Boba Fett, I’m quitting the role of Sam and playing Boba Fett! (Laughs.)

He is however returning to the world of the TV sitcom though with a project loosely based on the 2003 Adam Sandler/Jack Nicholson film of the same name, studio Lionsgate announced yesterday.

It had been widely rumoured that Sheen was close to agreeing a TV return with Joe Roth (head of Revolution Studios) with whom he has worked a number of times on films, including the likes of Young Guns so the news isn’t a complete shocker.

Sheen will reportedly have an ownership stake in the show which will hopefully keep him from mad-mouthing anyone associated with it, at least for a little while anyway.

In a surprising twist though Sheen will apparently be playing a take on Jack Nicholson’s character from the film, which would make him the Doctor rather than the patient as many would have expected.

The film character is certainly a little unorthodox in his methods though so Sheen should be a perfect fit for the role.

The Walking Dead Season 2 - First Look

Another video clip, but this time one that’s actually relevant and current.

During the season 4 premiere of Breaking Bad the other night, AMC aired the following ‘first look’ at season 2 of The Walking Dead.

The minute long clip shows Andrew Lincoln’s Rick Grimes taking a rock to the head of two walkers, it doesn’t give much away but is as graphic as we’ve come to expect from the show and clearly indicates that things aren’t about to get any easier for the band of survivors…

The Lonely Island - Jack Sparrow

Whilst I’m posting comedy videos, I heard the other day that this had now hit 30 million views on Youtube; I’d already posted a couple of the new Lonely Island videos earlier in the year upon their release but Jack Sparrow came out during one of TV or not TV’s numerous down-times this year so this got missed, but better late than never as they say…

And Then Trigger Made a Face...

I saw a forum discussion the other day on Stewart Lee and this bit in particular from Comedy Vehicle so decided I’d put it up on here for anyone who’s never caught it before, as it’s nothing short of genius…

Sons of Anarchy Season 3 UK Air Date

Looking at the stats for TV or not TV it’s clear that one of the most popular shows amongst site visitors is the brilliant Sons of Anarchy; and a large proportion of those visitors hail from right here in the UK.

So with that in mind, although I’m sure you’re all already well aware, I just wanted to give a quick plug for said show’s return to UK TV tomorrow night on FIVE USA.

Season 3 of Sons of Anarchy will air at 10pm in the slot vacated by Justified on FIVE USA and sees the Sons travel to Ireland for part of it in search of Jax’s baby son Abel who was kidnapped at the end of season 2.

The season will delve deeper in to the history of the club and the mythology of the show, and although not as much of a critical success in the States as previous seasons, it should still be a hell of a ride for fans of the show.

Californication Season 5 - Casting News

Although season 4 of Californication is yet to air in the UK, it has long since been and gone in the US and pre-production is now well under way for season 5 of the David Duchovny-starring dramedy.

A number of guest stars for the new season have already been announced, former Wu-Tang Clan member turned actor RZA will play a hip-hop mogul and Meagan Good of Stomp the Yard and Biker Boyz will play a protégé of his.

Justified’s Natalie Zea (Winona) has also been previously announced to recur in the new season as a Hank Moody love interest – what else?

Now in addition we also have The Sopranos’ Drea de Matteo and Greek’s Scott Michael Foster signed up.

The latter, whose work I’m for the most part unfamiliar with, is likely to be a thorn in Hank’s side as he will be playing Tyler, a love interest for Hank’s daughter Becca.

Anyone dating Becca is always going to be on a hiding to nothing with Hank but Tyler reportedly manages to alienate Hank even further by being a cocky, obnoxious, rich snob.

Emmy-winner de Matteo, in a nice bit of casting, will appear as a stripper who spends time with Hank. I have a bit of a thing for de Matteo so her playing a stripper may appeal to the pervert inside me even more than Eva Amurri doing the same did in season 3.

De Matteo, as well as being very sexy, is also a hell of an actress and in addition to her award-winning work on The Sopranos has also appeared in the likes of Sons of Anarchy, Desperate Housewives and erm, Friends spin-off Joey…

Season 4 of Californication had a stellar list of guest stars to its name and so far it looks as though season 5 is set to rival its predecessor for famous faces recurring and giving Hank all manner of headaches and temptations.
