Californication 3.5 'Slow Happy Boys'

“My vagina looks like downtown Baghdad right now” – Daisy

You’ll have to forgive my rather brief recap of this week’s Californication as the bank holiday weekend brings birthdays to celebrate, parties to attend and money to lose at the races meaning my time is somewhat limited this week.

This was quite a bawdy episode of Californication and for a show that is pretty bawdy at its quietest of times that is quite a bold statement.

Slow Happy Boys practically ditched the Hank-as-teacher storyline that has thus far been season 3’s big arc and instead focussed on our hero’s relationship with an old friend who’d come to visit Hank in LA.

We begin with Hank dropping the now ridiculously cartoonishly sullen Becca off at the airport to go and visit Karen in New York.

Seriously, I know Becca is supposed to be a grumpy emo teen but no teenager is that cold no matter how shitty they perceive their life to be. They are seriously in danger of ruining the whole Hank-Becca dynamic if her current personality remains for the foreseeable.

After waving off Becca in his incomparable style Hank headed over to arrivals to pick up old friend ‘Zloz’.

It turns out Zloz has finally looked up Hank after all these years as he had a big blow-out with his wife and fancied partying with the master to blow off some steam.

Zloz was played by Kevin Corrigan, who was the best thing on the criminally underrated and underappreciated Grounded For Life and he played the role perfectly.

I did have a hard time buying Zloz as an old friend of Hank though, but I assume that was the point. The idea was surely to show how far Hank has come since his New York days and that Zloz was what could have been if Hank hadn’t “got out”. So while it’s hard to buy Zloz and Hank and even Corrigan and Duchovny as running buddies, Corrigan was perfectly cast as the NYC working class hero in this fish-out-of-water scenario.

The episode basically followed the debauched night out that Zloz craved and Hank, with a little help from Charlie, duly supplied.

First to Sue Collini’s party where we were introduced to Sue’s wheelchair bound husband who is an expert in the “oral arts”; this role was filled by the brilliant Stephen Root, who has appeared in so many great shows lately his CV must be practically glittering: True Blood, 24, Justified and now Californication.

Root’s appearance was brief but I sincerely hope this isn’t the last we’ve seen of him, because he does sleazy very well and this role, call me crazy, seems like a sleazy one.

After Zloz got in to a bit of trouble with a tranny in the hot tub (I would’ve made the same error because there is no way that woman had a cock) Hank whisked him out of there along with the bedless for the night Runkle (I’ll get to that in a minute) to Jackie’s strip club where more trouble ensued.

First though let’s tackle why Runkle happened to be locked out of his house again:

My prediction for the fall-out from last week’s episode for the Runkles was way off; Marcy not only most definitely wanted to revisit the sex she and Charlie had, she wanted it there and then in Sue Collini’s fantastically graphic S & M room - whoever invented and/or found that seat with the swinging dildos built into it needs some sort of medal.

Charlie’s sex drive had been somewhat diminished though following a visit from his former porn star lover Daisy who returned, with comedy inflated boobs, to inform Runkle she had contracted some gnarly STDs.

When Charlie finally spilled the beans to Marcy her reaction was to punch him in the face, thus he found himself back at the strip club with Hank as Zloz set about causing a massive brawl after he couldn’t resist sucking one of the strippers’ silicone-enhanced norks during a lapdance.

The morning after scene at Hanks was a scene of silent comedy genius as a groggy Hank awoke, fished his sunglasses out of the bathtub, found Charlie butt naked with two strippers in a bed, passed a small, fat, black stripper in his kitchen (my favourite part) and then discovered a passed out Zloz on his living room floor.

Hank of course awoke with Jackie next to him, and that is something that just bothers me. My obsession with Eva Amurri has diminished since we got to see her naked two weeks in a row so it’s not a jealousy thing.

There’s just something a little wrong about a guy as old as Hank effortlessly bedding a smoking hot stripper young enough to be his daughter, and the fact that she is now referring to “Dr. Henry Moody” as her “boyfriend” is all the more disturbing.

That said, the fact that she played along with Hank making Zloz think he’d been the one to bed Jackie was quite a sweet moment as she and Hank mouthed affection to each other over Zloz’s shoulder.

After sending off Zloz, who had a final reel revelation that he might actually be dying, hence the trip; Hank was surprised, as were we, to see Karen follow Becca out of the terminal doors.

The way Hank greeted her would lead one to believe that Jill, Felicia and especially Jackie are going to be rather pissed now Hank’s Juliet is back in town.

How long is she back for? That will have to be answered next week, but one thing is guaranteed: I can’t wait to see how this all plays out.

Other Quick Thoughts:

- If this supremely funny episode wasn’t already my favourite episode of the season, it quickly achieved that status the second I heard the late, great Warren Zevon’s ‘Werewolves of London’ used.

Any show that references and uses the music of Zevon as much as Californication has to be one of the best shows on TV whichever way you cut it.

- From the spoilery stuff I’ve seen for the season I’m almost certain Hank does end up bedding Felicia before the season is through, with Karen back in town I’m very curious to see how that tryst comes about.

Californication continues Wednesday @ 11.20pm on FIVER

Tron Legacy "Soundtrack"

The Walking Dead - Season 1 "Trailer"

Mi segundo estreno de temporada.

Retro Review - The Kill Point

(Left to Right:)
Jeremy Davidson, Leo Fitzpatrick, John Leguizamo,
JD Williams & Frank Grillo in 'The Kill Point'.
I recently went through my DVD set of The Kill Point, a 2007 miniseries produced by Spike TV, the first drama of its kind to be produced by the network.

I was originally drawn to check out the show due to comparisons with 24 and The Wire; and although both of these comparisons are somewhat tenuous I can see why both were made and ultimately I’m glad they were, otherwise I may never have found the series.

The 24 comparison clearly came about due to the fact that the action is concentrated over a number of hours rather than a vast amount of time. The comparison to The Wire I can only assume is as a result of the two shows sharing so many cast members (Michael Hyatt, Leo Fitzpatrick, JD Williams & Michael K. Williams all appear in major roles) although The Kill Point is somewhat of a slow build in terms of storytelling but by no means in the same brilliantly deft way The Wire did it.

The two main characters in the show are played by John Leguizamo and Donnie Wahlberg, who ironically would team up a year later to play partners rather than adversaries in the poorly received Pacino-De Niro movie Righteous Kill.

Here though Leguizamo and Wahlberg are on opposite sides of the law and prove to be formidable adversaries to each other.

The basic premise of the show is that Leguizamo and members of his former platoon who served together in Iraq, return from the war and disillusioned with life and how they are treated attempt to pull off a huge bank robbery.

The robbery goes wrong though and the five men end up barricaded in the bank with several hostages, events then play out over the multi-day negotiations between Leguizamo’s Mr. Wolf and Wahlberg’s negotiator Horst Cali.

All the bank robbers take names from an animal in a rather lamer version of the colour monikers the characters in Reservoir Dogs have.

Here we have Mr. Wolf, Mr. Rabbit (Jeremy Davidson), Mr. Pig (Prison Break & The Shield’s Frank Grillo), Mr. Mouse (Fitzpatrick) and Mr. Cat (JD Williams).

The Kill Point runs over eight episodes and is supremely tense; without giving too many spoilers away there are several escape attempts, numerous fractured relationships, dissension between the robbers and the odd moment of comedy.

The characters are somewhat clichéd, a criticism that has been aimed at the show, but there are plenty of interesting developments along the way that keep The Kill Point from treading too far into well-trodden territory.

Cali’s penchant for the correct use of grammar is a nice source of comedy during the first few episodes, the relationship between Wolf and Cali also develops well as the series progresses, culminating in a moment of respect during their final showdown that echoes the confrontation their two future co-stars had at the end of Heat.

The production value of the show isn’t huge but as most of the drama stems from interaction between the characters rather than explosions and gun fights that doesn’t tend to hurt the show too much.

The majority of the bullets don’t tend to fly until the finale, after the initial bank robbery obviously – which again has echoes of Heat, but the tension and drama builds very satisfyingly to the finale so when we finally do end in a crescendo of bullets and bloodshed you find yourself emotionally invested in these men even if they are the ‘villains’.

Leguizamo is the star of the show getting two great monologues about the war for the TV cameras surrounding the bank that he really sinks his teeth into.

In addition to both leads being strong, the supporting cast are equally as impressive, especially the bank robbers.

Frank Grillo as Mr. Pig gets the chance to bring more to the table than the rather one note characters he played on The Shield and Prison Break. The real breakout star though is relative unknown Jeremy Davidson as Mr. Rabbit, whose war damage gradually leads to him becoming more and more volatile.

Michael K. Williams gets at least one philosophical monologue per episode as he waxes lyrical to his spotter, Williams is essentially just playing Omar Little on the right side of the law though as his words sound eerily familiar to those of everyone’s favourite stick-up artist.

There are faults with the show sure, but as a pretty low key series this is pleasantly surprising and I was hooked and managed to blitz through the DVD in no time, bringing back memories of how I went through the original seasons of Lost and 24 on DVD, and if that’s not a ringing endorsement then I don’t know what is.

Sadly The Kill Point was never brought back for a second run by Spike, though how they would have logically done that anyway I’m unsure of, but if you’re looking for a DVD drama to get stuck into that will only steal 8 hours of your time rather than say 24 then this would be a great addition to anyone’s library.

The Kill Point is currently available on DVD (£6.99 at amazon and play)

The Walking Dead Trailer... Again

During Comic Con last month I posted a grainy-as-hell video featuring the trailer for AMC’s upcoming zombie epic The Walking Dead.

That same trailer is now online and thankfully now doesn’t look like it was filmed by Abraham Zapruder.

We also now have a premiere date for the show – Halloween night.

Obviously this is a US air date but rumours suggest that the UK will not be too far behind with the show which is set to be broadcast on FX on these shores, which means we could have the show as early as November.

The Walking Dead, which stars our very own Andrew Lincoln and Prison Break’s Sarah Wayne Callies, is set to be one of the events of the new TV season and I am eagerly awaiting its debut.

For anyone who has yet to see the trailer, you can view the new, crystal clear, trailer below:

Creative Arts Emmys 2010 Winners

Last night saw The Creative Arts Emmys take place, which is basically an excuse to get most of the lesser categories out of the way before the big show next Sunday.

The main categories that were announced last night included the outstanding guest star in both comedy and drama for actors and actresses. So this gives me my first chance to check off how I did with my predictions when the nominees were announced last month…

As the above picture probably gives away guest actor in a comedy went to Neil Patrick Harris for his turn as Bryan Ryan in Glee. I picked Mike O’Malley as the most deserving of the nominees and Harris obviously thought O’Malley was just as deserving, going as far as to name drop him in his speech. I had also suggested that Emmy golden boy Jon Hamm could inexplicably win here for his guest spot on 30 Rock, so no points here!

Of course Betty White won guest actress in a comedy and although I disagree with SNL being included in this category for the performers when the show doesn’t qualify itself I rightly picked out Betty White for this award so I’m 1 for 2.

Guest actor in a drama series went to predictably John Lithgow, who was, from what I’ve read, unreal on Dexter last season – I rightly tipped him last month, so I go 2 for 3.

Finally of the important awards last night, and by important I mean the ones I actually covered in my nominations piece last month, was guest actress in a drama series which went to Ann-Margret for Law & Order: SVU. This was a tough category for me to pick a winner in as I was only familiar with Elizabeth Mitchell’s work so I took a wild stab at Lily Tomlin here so it puts me at a 50% strike rate thus far.

We’ll see how that total changes after the main show next Sunday, but in the meantime you can check out the full list of winners from last night’s show after the jump:

Michael J. Fox to Guest on The Good Wife

Over the last few weeks I’ve brought my unhealthy Back to the Future obsession to the site as I salivate over the upcoming Blu Ray release of the trilogy.

I have always been a Back to the Future geek ergo I have always been a Michael J. Fox geek.

Ever since his Parkinsons caused him to semi-retire from acting I have always been thrilled to hear of him appearing on screen, whatever the role.

Following up his brilliant guest appearance on the last season of Rescue Me, Fox has reportedly signed on to appear on the second season of the smash hit The Good Wife.

As with his roles on Rescue Me and Scrubs, which both alluded to his illness, this latest role will also play on Fox’s Parkinsons.

Fox will play Simon Canning an attorney who has a win-at-all-costs attitude and even goes as far as to use his neurological condition to win over the judge and jury in favour of his clients, guilty or not.

Fox’s character is set to lock horns with Julianna Margulies’ character Alicia Florrick in the court room and everyone associated with the show is as thrilled as I am to have Fox involved with the show.

Show creators and exec producers Robert and Michelle King are quoted as saying: “We're absolutely thrilled that Michael has agreed to play this role…

Californication 3.4 'Zoso'

“Hank I’ve been making some phone calls on your behalf, and
guess what – people think you’re a cunt… no joke.” – Sue Collini

Well it didn’t take Hank long to do what I really hoped he wouldn’t and sleep with my beloved Jackie, but to be fair to the guy no sane man could’ve resisted what was offered to him – “Can I touch one?”

David Duchovny and the writers deserve so much credit for making Hank, a man who is essentially playing three women (four if you include Karen) at the same time, into the most sympathetic character on the show.

The title of the episode: ‘Zoso’ of course refers to Jimmy Page’s famous symbol and Hank was certainly getting a ‘Whole Lotta Love’ (sorry) in this episode.

This was a very funny episode of a show that can be superbly silly and superbly serious in equal doses.

The episode began with Hank in his office with both Felicia and Jill throwing themselves at him yet again, Felicia revealing that her husband had in fact once cheated on her and she was looking to finally cash in on her payback – with Hank.

After a meeting with Sue Collini and Charlie in which Sue suggested Hank become a glorified gigolo and charm his way into the hearts, minds… and pants of all the old lonely Hollywood “snatch” out there to turn around his unpopularity in La-La Land; Hank and Runkle headed off to Jackie’s strip club after the buxom lovely dropped Hank’s class.

As one-note as Kathleen Turner’s character is on the show, every time she is on screen you can almost guarantee the best lines of the episode are going to be uttered. She only featured in one scene this week but still managed to get in four or five hugely quotable lines (see above).

“Collini out”.

Was Jackie quitting Hank’s class a ploy to get our hero into the sack? If it was it certainly worked. After finding Jackie at the strip club performing under the pseudonym Ashley Madison she coerced Hank into having a lap dance before the two had somewhat of a heart to heart at the bar.

In between this we got some Charlie gold as Runkle managed to cum in his pants during a rather vigorous lapdance – “it was a compliment!” before he was called back home to aid Marcy in trying to sell their home to an interested couple.

This ended rather graphically badly as Marcy left a used tampon floating in the toilet which then managed to block the toilet when they tried to quickly flush it.

“Fuuuck, it’s like a slasher film in there…”

Whether it was Charlie’s way with words or just her own depression that drove Marcy back into Charlie’s arms remains to be seen, but we left the Runkles in a passionate clinch. No doubt this will be followed up next week with Charlie thinking they’re back together and Marcy regretting the incident deeply but I for one am rooting for the Runkles.

As Hank left the strip club he spotted Jackie in the parking lot being hassled by a bunch of frat boys and decided to defend her virtue in his own incomparable way…

“Someone’s looking for a mouthful of cock and balls huh?”

“Now that does not sound very appetising… or filling”

After an asskicking left Hank licking his wounds Jackie took it upon herself to take him home to clean him up only to then use the moment to make her move which Hank resisted briefly but finally gave in to, as any fan of Eva Amurri’s Louvre-worthy boobs would have.

Hank obviously had a twinge of guilt over what he had been getting up to as he laid awake later that night and ended up on a Skype chat to Karen, which was as touching as usual.

Karen’s absence from the show in a major capacity this season has been a big loss as her relationship with Hank is so important to the show’s heart and soul, but at least in these brief conversations that undying love still shines through for Californication’s Romeo & Juliet.

The chat with Karen felt like a natural end for the episode so when the fade to black didn’t lead to the end credits I was surprised; but as we saw Hank at college it became obvious that his chickens were about to come home to roost.

First Jill revealed she would be going commando for his class and gave Hank an eyeful from the front row, then Felicia decided to audit the class, sitting down right next to Jill, and then of course, predictably, Jackie then returned to the class bragging about her “hot date” from the night before.

As Hank turned to the white board and began to write I knew exactly what he was going to scrawl up there, and it perfectly summed up how Mr. Moody feels about the situation he has managed to get himself into in spite of trying his best to resist his three admirers…

“FUCK”.

Other Thoughts:

- No Peter Gallagher this week which was a shame, hopefully Dean Koons will be back next week to be antagonised some more by Hank.

- I was a little disappointed by the lack of follow up on Felicia taking Becca shopping; I was expecting Becca to come back looking rather slutty and Hank to freak out.

- One of my favourite lines of the night was Jackie’s “you once spent an entire class ranting about how much you hate Coldplay” – how awesome would Hank Moody be as your college professor!?

- No Rick Springfield follow up this week which was a surprise, after his introduction last week as Charlie’s big fish signing.

- I liked the fact that Balt was at least referenced again as Jackie’s room mate even if he wasn’t seen. I hate it when shows have selective memories about characters and their back-stories.

Californication continues on FIVER Wednesday @ 11.15pm

Hacks After SAMCRO Yet Again…

I don’t know what it is about the Sons of Anarchy crew that makes hacks in the media and specifically on blogs such as this (giving us all a bad name) want to twist every little thing that they say and try and light up a little controversy.

A few weeks back every little thing SAMCRO mastermind Kurt Sutter said was being twisted into some sort of rant against the show’s lack of Emmy nominations; and now leading actor Charlie Hunnam is falling foul of the dishonest douchebags with nothing better to do than take comments out of context.

The Chicago Tribune claimed that, in an interview most people would have been honoured just to get, Hunnam was disappointed with the fact that the actors aren’t always completely in the picture of what is coming up for their characters.

The ever honest Sutter quickly took to twitter to not only defend this practice but also emphasise the fact that the bond between the cast and crew of this great show is just as strong as the bond between the MC they tell the story of, in spite of what dirt sheets might have you believe.

Kurt Sutter is a brutally honest man, often too honest for his own good, on his blog Sutter Ink, on his twitter @sutterink and even in interviews, but would any of us want him any other way!?

This is a man with passion, something sadly missing in so many of our writers these days and I respect him and everything he does far more for the fact that he doesn’t always necessarily do what is considered ‘the norm’ for a show runner on a successful show such as ‘Sons’.

I’d like to think I know enough about Kurt Sutter to categorically say that he will never tow the party line, and I thank God for that, because the day that happens is the day that Sons of Anarchy stops being the best goddamn thing on TV.

People will never stop believing what they read though which is why it’s so disgraceful how journalists and bloggers twist words to get their story or fit their narrative (just look at Fox ‘News’), that’s something I will never do on here and the day I do will be the day I stop writing.

Thankfully, always willing to keep SAMCROs passionate and loyal fan base in the loop Sutter has kept us up to date with what is really going behind the scenes via twitter and the answer is, disappointingly for the haters: nothing.

I won’t bother reprinting all his tweets on the issue as some people have already, because quite frankly you should be following him already if you’re a ‘Sons’ fan.

But I will leave you with his opening gambit from today which quite wonderfully and succinctly sums up how I feel about half the crap I read on this wonderful world wide web of ours on a daily basis…

“talentless wannabe hacks, angry douchebags w/ macbooks, power-slurping losers with web batons, self-righteous cunts: few things i want dead.”

Roger Federer’s William Tell Trick Shot

It’s quite blatantly staged but it’s still pretty awesome nonetheless…

Mad Men Season 4 Coming to BBC4 in September

Christina Hendricks as Mad Men's
resident sex bomb Joan Harris
The BBC’s erratic airing of Mad Men continues, but at least this time it’s good news.

Season 4, the latest of the award-winning series, will air in the UK next month. Usually we are a good half year behind the US in terms of getting new Mad Men so this is a definite improvement.

Since BBC4 began airing the show there’s been absolutely no structure to when they air each new season but hopefully this will be the start of them bringing their air dates more in line with that of AMC in the States.

If Sky1 can show new episodes of US shows in the same week then why can’t the BBC?

Season 4 of Mad Men has been airing in the US for a few weeks now and has been receiving favourable reviews as always; with a big gap in the schedules at the moment this news couldn’t have come at a better time, and I can’t wait to see what is happening at the newly formed Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce…

Mad Men Season 4 will begin airing on BBC4 some time in September – keep it locked to TV or not TV for further info…

Back to the Future Blu Ray Trailer

Last month I shot my verbal jizz all over the upcoming Back to the Future Trilogy Blu Ray.

It’s not been as well documented on here (yet) but anyone familiar with my work over at Obsessed with Film will know that I have a rather unhealthy love of everything Back to the Future.

As if news of a Blu Ray release wasn’t exciting enough, we now have a trailer to go along with it featuring Doc and Marty looking resplendent in High Def glory.

Now normally I would never encourage readers to visit the cum rag of a website that is Digital Spy but sadly as I can’t find anywhere that will let me embed the trailer here I’m going to have to direct your attention to the link below.

On the plus side though they do also have a trailer up for the theatrical re-release of Back to the Future as part of the 25th anniversary celebrations, so you might feel dirty whilst you’re visiting the site but it’ll be worth it I promise.

You can check out both trailers by following the link below:

Back to the Future Blu Ray Trailer

Back to the Future is re-released into cinemas on 1st October and the Blu Ray is out 26th October.

Terriers Trailer

I have previously posted a teaser trailer for Shawn Ryan’s upcoming FX show Terriers, but now we have a full bona fide full length trailer.

And how awesome does this show look!? You can view the trailer below:

As I said before I’ve always been a huge Donal Logue fan and how great is it to see Rockmond Dunbar featured quite heavily in the trailer?

Other faces of note in the trailer – was that Dollhouse’s Olivia Williams popping up at one point?

Terriers is set to debut in the US on 8th September and should form a formidable partnership for the network with the returning Sons of Anarchy.

Dodge's 'Invisible Monkey' Response to PETA

After PETA got up on their high horse (pun intended) over Dodge’s latest ad for its use of a monkey, the US car giant responded with a surprising sense of humour.

The original ad featured a monkey dressed like a stunt man setting off some shitty fireworks, but PETA claimed it was irresponsible for a big company like Dodge to use an ape in their ad given the well-documented history of abuse that monkeys have suffered in the entertainment industry – what they did to King Kong was just mean.

Now I respect PETA and everything they do but sometimes they do have a tendency to go too far, this being one of those times. By their reasoning, would it be wrong to feature a Jewish person or a black person in an ad given the hardships their people have faced in the past?

PETA ordered Dodge to pull the ad, proving that it’s not just the UK where people have no sense of humour over humorous ads – remember the Paddy Power ‘Cat Kick’ ad controversy?

Dodge decided to make lemonade though from the lemons that PETA provided them and the result is actually funnier than the original ad.

In Dodge’s post-PETA complaint ad the monkey has been digitally erased and you can just see his little stuntman outfit move towards the fireworks before Dexter’s Michael C. Hall, who is on voiceover duty for both ads, deadpans: “Oh wait, there’s an invisible monkey.”

Surreal? Yes.

Genius? You bet your sweet ass.

"Are you sexually harassing me right now? Because if you are,
I think I'm going to have to report you… For giving me a serious boner…" - Hank

This week’s Californication opened with a scene featuring Susan Sarandon’s best ever work…

…Her smokin’ hot daughter Eva Amurri and her remarkable norks, which seriously, could win the Turner Prize.

I’ve become a little bit obsessed with Eva Amurri since she first appeared last week as student turned stripper Jackie but I’ll try and reign in the pervy comments as much as I can for the length of this review.

Maybe not everyone is as perverted as me but I genuinely thought they might build up to the big reveal of Jackie finally getting naked on screen for the majority of the season. But no, her second episode opens with her writhing around topless in a dream sequence no less!

I’d love to have heard how they sold Amurri on that scene:

“Eva, we need you to go topless”

“Oh, ok – is it an important scene”

“Not really, just a dream sequence with no real bearing on advancing the story…”

Still I’m not complaining, at least now I can focus on the show for the remainder of the season rather than wondering what Jackie looks like naked… Sorry, I know I said I wouldn’t harp on about those magnificent mammaries but honestly they should be on display in The Guggenheim.

Enough about that spectacular opening scene though, because surprisingly the show didn’t go down hill rapidly after we saw some exquisite boobies (last time I promise!)

After the rather dark ending to last week’s episode I was surprised there wasn’t much follow up on the Hank-Becca profanity-laced argument that closed out last week’s instalment. Although there was clearly tension still there the two were at least civil to one another for the duration of ‘Verities & Balderdash’.

The episode mainly centred around Hank being invited to the annual English department mixer hosted by the Koons’; after initially refusing to attend, instead opting to play Guitar Hero with Becca, a phone call from Karen changed Hank’s mind and he and Becca headed over for the “wine and cheese”.

At the party, Hank seemed almost irresistible to the three women he has been spending time with recently – Felicia, Jill and Jackie who was working the bar at the party.

First after a rare moment of honesty and openness Felicia kissed Hank, only to be interrupted by Jackie, who then suggested Hank could have his way with her if he so desired.

Then, after she had seemingly been stood up by her date for the evening Jill gravitated towards Mr. Moody in Dean Koons’ private office whilst they were searching for his good liquor.

It would have been rude for Hank not to reciprocate the advances and the two got down to business on the Dean’s floor.

I was glad to see this tryst hadn’t seemingly destroyed the relationship between Hank and his T.A. as I like Diane Farr as Jill and hope to see her for the rest of the season; there will obviously be some awkwardness there now but hopefully that will only add to the witty repartee between the two of them.

Elsewhere, we got a little insight into Becca’s damaged mind as she and Chelsea took mushrooms together. The fact she is still a virgin must mean that Damien, whose whereabouts I have questioned thus far, didn’t last as a boyfriend and merely was the MacGuffin to keep Hank and Karen apart this season.

Over in Runkle’s world his joy at finally signing a client, Jesse’s Girl himself Rick Springfield, quickly turned to despair as Marcy caught him inside his boss Sue as she stopped by to celebrate with him.

Kathleen Turner continues to be absolutely amazing in this role and is clearly having the time of her life chewing the scenery for all it’s worth.

When will poor Charlie catch a break? After weeks of rejecting Sue’s overly aggressive advances he finally caves and Marcy catches him in the act.

This did lead us to a nice closing scene though as Hank, in Slanket, and Charlie shared a somewhat poignant moment wondering when they will both get their respective families back together again.

All in all I’d have to say probably the weakest episode of the three thus far but still a hell of a watch. Maybe it’s just the fact that absence has made the heart grow fonder but I can’t think of a show in the last year that has made me as happy and joyous to watch as Californication.

It is definitely the only show I feel the need to watch twice as well, purely just to pick up on all the great one-liners and banter that goes on.

Roll on next week…

Other Thoughts:

- I love Peter Gallagher, and it’s almost a shame to see him in such a stuffy role, the way he plays off Duchovny though is great and any time the two share a scene it is uniformly great.

It was also nice to see Dean Koons a little more relaxed this week as he entered his office singing and dancing, in a nice touch singing the same song that Richard Bates sung as he “tucked and did the pee-pee dance” back in the season premiere: “blow on my dice…”

- Merely an introduction for Rick Springfield, hopefully he’ll be a big part of episodes to come; the writers can definitely have a lot of fun here as Springfield seemed to be up for playing a much exaggerated version of himself after only one scene.

- Judging from that opening day dream, Hank is obviously smitten with Jackie, but do we think he’ll end up acting on his impulses? I’m torn at the moment, last week I would have said no but now I’m not so sure.

Personally I don’t really think we need to see Hank sleeping with a student, I know she’s obviously of consenting age but given the whole Mia statutory rape blackmail it’d just show that Hank has learned nothing from his dalliance with a very young woman. Then again, however much of “a world class a-hole” Hank is it’s impossible not to root for him.

- Although you could see Marcy walking in on Charlie and Sue a mile away, it was still superbly done by all concerned a raised a huge laugh, especially Marcy knowing straight away what her estranged husband was up to.

I’d assumed Charlie was under the table going down on Sue so when he poked his head round from behind her it was a very funny and, for me at least, unexpected moment.

And again, Kathleen Turner has just been sensational thus far and with the exception of Duchovny has been the season’s MVP thus far.

Californication Season 3 continues on Fiver Wednesday @ 11.25pm

Undercover Boss 2.4 'The Jockey Club'

Paul Fisher went undercover on
C4's Undercover Boss
Let me just start off by saying that Undercover Boss is not really a show that I would ever normally watch. As you can imagine though, with last week’s instalment featuring the Chief Operating Officer of The Jockey Club going undercover my interest was sparked and I tuned in – albeit a few days after it initially aired.

I know I’m rather late in posting my thoughts on the show, but that is because to be honest there was never really any intention to do a piece on Undercover Boss; however after watching the show I really did feel compelled to write a little review, so here goes.

The Jockey Club run most of the country’s top race courses, including Cheltenham, Haydock and Newmarket and Paul Fisher is the aforementioned C.O.O.

Fisher decided to go undercover because The Jockey Club are forced to rely on casual staff to make race days work as most courses only have twenty race days or so a year so full-time staff just doesn’t make financial sense.

Fisher wanted to find out just what sort of service these casual staff were offering race-goers and if they were presenting the sort of image The Jockey Club expected.

Posing as Richard Setter, an out of work accountant trying out entry level jobs for a TV show, Fisher’s first stop was Cheltenham during Festival week this year.

There he worked on the entrance to the course as an entry attendant, working alongside a remarkable man named George who at 81 was still going strong and performing crowd control at one of the busiest courses in the country.

Fisher’s next stop was Sandown where he worked in the course’s sea food restaurant as a waiter. From Sandown he travelled north to Carlisle where he worked with the ground staff run by 67-year-old Tony Wootton. Fisher’s final stop was Huntingdon, where he worked alongside the results board team.

For the first three quarters of the show it was pretty standard fare – out-of-touch boss brought back down to earth by the dedication and passion of the ‘minions’– but it was the last 15 minutes that really got me.

As emotionally manipulative as the final moments of the show were they really got to me and I actually did feel a little emotional afterwards.

I’ve never seen the show before and I assume that each episode ends this way but seeing the four people Fisher had worked alongside all rewarded for their hard work really was touching.

Especially in the case of Tony from Carlisle who had been worried about losing the company house he lived in when he soon retired. Fisher not only confirmed Tony would be allowed to stay in the house upon his retirement he also named Carlisle’s new hurdles track after him.

The guy from Huntingdon, whose name escapes me, was also rewarded handsomely for his unbelievable dedication. He was offered his dream – a full time job with The Jockey Club, it really was heartstrings stuff.

Maybe I fell for this episode of Undercover Boss like a sucker because it focussed on Horse Racing, but I fail to believe that anyone else would not have been moved by what they saw.

It is still available to watch on Channel 4 on Demand and if you get the chance I really recommend you check it out.

Rhys Darby/Danny McBride to The Office...?

Darby-Miflin...?
Rhys Darby is reportedly in the frame to
replace Steve Carrell on The Office.
One of the hottest TV topics of debate right now in America is who, if anyone, should replace Steve Carrell on The Office?

Further fuel was thrown on this burning issue yesterday as two potential replacements for the departing Carrell were announced courtesy of The Ausiello Files – somewhat of an authority on TV news.

The suggestion was that NBC have contacted Danny McBride and Rhys Darby about potentially joining the show next season.

McBride of course has a string of big Hollywood comedies under his belt, including Pineapple Express and Tropic Thunder but he is also currently starring in his own comedy over on HBO in the shape of Eastbound & Down.

Darby on the other hand has been somewhat quiet since the end of Flight of the Conchords, on which he was routinely the best thing (other than the songs), last year.

There has been no confirmation yet either way from showrunner Paul Lieberstein as to whether McBride or Darby are in the frame to replace Carrell when he leaves next year; all that has been said is that the writers are "having discussions" about possibly bringing in a new character next year who could possibly be a long term replacement for Carrell - "We haven't settled exactly who will take over," Lieberstein said.

I personally think Darby would be a great replacement for Carrell, I’m not a huge fan of the US version of The Office but from what I’ve seen, Darby can definitely pull off that sort of clueless, delusional loser role that would fit the show perfectly.

Bret Harrison Joins V

Bret Harrison has joined the cast of V
It’s Reaper alumnus day here on TV or not TV!

Because after earlier reporting on Michael Ian Black, who played Steve on the now sadly defunct supernatural dramedy, and his new web series Backwash earlier on; it has been revealed that Bret Harrison, who played main character Sam on Reaper, has been cast in the upcoming second season of ABC’s reimagining of V.

Harrison will appear in a recurring role as an evolutionary biologist named Dr. Sidney Miller according to Entertainment Weekly.

The character will reportedly first appear in the second season premiere when he is tracked down by FBI agent Erica Evans, played by the wonderful Elizabeth Mitchell.

Season 2 of V is expected to begin in November in the US.

I’m pleased to see Harrison back on our screens as I’ve always liked him, he was good in Grounded For Life and even the dire The Loop, but he really excelled in Reaper; and as a big fan of the show I was disappointed when it was cancelled.

Hopefully Harrison will now get a chance to shine on a successful show and become better known as a result.

Backwash Trailer

The first trailer for Crackle’s new web series Backwash is now online.

The series will star comedy God Michael Ian Black and The West Wing’s Josh Malina (who co-wrote) and follows the exploits of three guys who end up on a trans-American road trip in an ice cream van with the cops in hot pursuit.

The series looks to have an impressive cast of guest players including TV’s own Jon Hamm, Hank Azaria, John Cho and “Judaism’s” Sarah Silverman.

Weezer 'Hurley' Album Cover

Weezer, a band renowned for creating some of the greatest videos of all time have now created one of the greatest album covers of all time.

The album is called ‘Hurley’ and who better to put on the cover than Lost’s own ‘Hurley’ Hugo Reyes (Jorge Garcia)!?!

This is without a doubt the most genius album cover I’ve seen in a long time and a great way to get over that post-Lost depression, I defy any Lost fan not to get a big silly grin on their face when they see this.

The album cover is cropped from a picture of when Rivers Cuomo met Jorge Garcia (see below) and is officially one of the greatest things I’ve ever seen!

The album is out on 14th September.

Entourage to End Next Year

Entourage will come to an end after
next year's eighth season

The entourage will be no more next year as HBO calls time on one of its longest running shows.

The seventh season of the Hollywood based comedy is currently airing in the States (when we will get it in the UK is anybody’s guess!) but next year’s eighth season of the show will be the last.

This wasn’t a complete bolt out of the blue as exec producer Mark Wahlberg had previously hinted that the eighth season may be the last, but it is now officially confirmed.

HBO programming president Michael Lombardo even revealed that the final season might be a short one: "We'll do a shorter order to finish up… We talked about six [episodes].”

Fans of Vince, Ari and the gang can take some comfort in the fact that the end of the TV show might not necessarily be the end of the story though as Entourage may have an afterlife as a feature film, the HBO executives told TV critics in LA at the weekend.

Lombardo stated that show creator Doug Ellin "clearly wants to write a film. But he also wants to do it when the storytelling makes sense. So he is clearly thinking about how the [TV] show will end."

Lombardo said HBO has a long-term relationship with Ellin and that "he's already pitched other shows to us. I would expect within the next couple of years you’ll see him with another show."

As big a fan as I am of the show, I can’t say I’m massively disappointed by this news – the show has kind of run its course now and I’d far rather see it go out on a high note than outstay its welcome and go stale.

What do you think about the end of Entouarge – are you happy or sad to see the back of Vince, Turtle, E, Drama and Ari?

Harbinger Retired

Harbinger of Doom - Harbinger, officially the best flat
horse in the world, has been retired due to injury.
Sad, but expected, news broke yesterday that Harbinger had been retired from Horse Racing.

On Saturday morning the four-year-old colt, who became the highest-rated flat horse in the world following his 11-length destruction of the field in the King George at Ascot last month, broke his near-fore cannon bone on the gallops at Newmarket.

The horse who has been hailed as "one of the all-time greats" underwent surgery on Saturday evening but connections decided it was too much of a risk to return the Sir Michael Stoute trained horse back to the racecourse.

A decision on a potential stud career has yet to be confirmed but it is widely expected that will be the future for this great animal

Harry Herbert, racing manager for Highclere Thoroughbred Racing, said in a statement issued on behalf of the colt's owners, the Admiral Rous Syndicate: "It is with regret that it has been decided to retire Harbinger from racing… Thanks to the professionalism of the veterinary surgeons… The operation undertaken at Rossdales Hospital has been successful… We are pleased to report that the horse is recovering well. The decision to retire Harbinger is based on the welfare of the horse which is paramount. The owners, for whom this is very sad, are naturally sorry that their great horse has had his career cut short.”

It’s a body blow for Racing which needed a new flat superstar after Sea the Stars was retired last season but the safety and well-being of the horse is what really matters, and as sad as it is that just as he had started to exert his dominance over the sport his career is ended, his legacy will remain in tact.
