The Big C - Season 1 "Promo"

The End is Here

One of the greatest TV shows of the decade came to an end on Sunday night/Monday morning (depending on where in the World you are) as the series finale of Lost finally aired.

My original plan for this week was, with both Lost and 24 ending, to cast an eye over some of the new shows that will be hitting our screens this fall season and see if there is anything amongst that little lot that could possibly fill the chasm in the schedules that the two aforementioned TV juggernauts have/will leave (more on that next week now).

But in the aftermath of Lost’s beautifully realised finale, cyberspace has been full of people venting their spleen over the 2 and a half hour epic that unfolded. Some praising the poignancy of it, some crapping all over it – whichever camp you are in yourself or have been reading the work of, it certainly seems as though any idiot with access to a keyboard and a blog or website has been voicing their opinion on the Lost finale.

So with that in mind, here are my thoughts…

First of all, let’s just set one thing straight, finales are always shat on by just about everyone. From Seinfeld to The Sopranos, people never react well to their favourite shows disappearing from their screen. A finale can never live up to the lofty expectations that fans have for the swan song of something that they have lived and breathed for years.

Sadly, this is now true of Lost as well.

People are ranting left, right and centre about a lack of answers, a cop out ending and just about anything else you can imagine. Half of it I’m convinced is down to a lack of intelligence. I’ve read literally dozens of different theories on what actually happened in the finale, when to me I think it’s pretty clear.

I’ve got to admit I sat there for a good few minutes after the credits rolled hoping that maybe there’d be some post-credits reveal or bonus scene, but when I realised that wasn’t coming I was content and satisfied with how this TV phenomenon had wrapped up.

People with an axe to grind are wrongly focussing too much on the ending that occurred in the flash-sideways universe and I really don’t understand why. This is a thread that was only introduced for this season and I think that it was tied up very poetically and complimented the fact that this was the final season almost magically.

There have been five other glorious seasons of this show with island based adventure, if the island storylines had been wrapped up with some sort of ‘it was all a dream’ explanation then I could definitely understand the bile some people are spewing towards the show.

But that wasn’t the case, I think the island-based story was concluded at a perfect juncture – book ended so brilliantly by Jack in the bamboo field. Enough characters got resolutions and enough was left open for us to imagine what would happen in the future.

Lost is a show with a rabid fan base and it has to have played into Cuse and Lindelof’s plans that fans will be speculating and telling stories about Lost long after the show has ended. If they’d tied up absolutely every loose end then there’d be nothing left for people to dwell on and debate.

Was anyone really expecting the myriad of questions the show has posed over its six season run to be answered in one two and a half hour episode? There were that many balls to be juggled we were always going to be left with a few outstanding queries.

The major questions had been answered long before the finale even aired.

I’ve read pieces from people that have brought up Walt – do they not realise that given the fact Malcolm David Kelley grew almost beyond recognition in his time away from the show that it would have been nigh on impossible to bring him back. His journey was wrapped up just fine for me when Locke met with him a couple of seasons back.

I genuinely hope that over time, people’s raw feelings will evaporate and that the venom being directed at Lost at the moment is just down to anger that this magnificent spectacle has now finished, or just down to the uncontrollable stupidity that I touched on earlier.

Because I personally adored the finale. I laughed, I (very nearly) cried and I was kept hooked (at 5am in the morning no less) for two and a half very short hours. Even clocking in at a mammoth running time, it wasn’t enough. I never wanted it to end; this was a master class in gripping television.

I loved the diversity of those who actually got to leave the island in the end – I would have never called those six being the ones who got away – Frank, Richard, Miles, Sawyer, Kate and Claire.

I suppose it helps that Richard, Miles and Sawyer are my favourite three characters, after Desmond of course, but it was still most definitely a motley crew of survivors.

Everyone who hadn’t died we left in a place I think they were happy with – even in death, Jack found the meaning on the island he had been looking for, Ben finally got to be important to the island, Desmond lived and had the hope of maybe being reunited with Penny and Hurley was left to do what he does best and “take care of people”.

I honestly don’t see how anyone can gripe about how things were left on the island.

People seem to be directing most of the disparaging comments towards the flash-sideways universe, which has been nothing but entertaining all season.

My view on this is that if this had just been a season finale rather than the series finale there would be no where near this level of controversy but as it was the series finale, expectations were in another stratosphere.

The flash-sideways universe was only a small(ish) piece of the most majestic jigsaw puzzle and dwelling too much on that one aspect of the show will only sour the memories you have.

It was a spiritual, multi-denominational religious ending but it gave our beloved characters, and us, a happy ending. Lovers and friends were reunited, people’s journeys came to an end and almost every character found closure and just “let go”, which is now what we ourselves need to do.

Without the flash-sideways universe, very few characters would have had a happy ending. Sure Sawyer eventually got off crap hole island but he had lost his beloved Juliet and just about every other character was far happier in ‘death world’ than we left them in the living.

The finale was an emotional affair, but it was that Sawyer-Juliet reunion that very nearly pushed me over the edge – I always loved those two together and you must have a heart of stone if you weren’t moved just a little by their vending machine reunion.

All the ‘awakening’ moments in the sideways storyline were emotional – Sayid and Shannon, Charlie and Claire, even Jack and Kate – a feel good ending for so many characters was never going to happen on the island but this alt-universe gave the audience and the characters an ending of joy rather than pain.

I’m not usually one for saccharine but I fell hook, line and sinker for this final episode. It nearly moved me to tears and if any other genuine fans out there feel differently then I think they’ve really missed the point of Lost.

I honestly believe there are two groups of people who watched Lost: those, like myself, who simply fell in love with the characters, the storytelling and the mysticism of it all and those who watched out of curiosity – to see just what all the fuss was about and not to miss out if some earth-shattering revelation was eventually made.

If you are one of the former then I would imagine you are of a similar mindset to me, if you are one of the latter then you are probably writing an angry piece tearing the finale, and the show, to pieces as we speak.

Lost has always and will always be a character piece. Sure, the mysteries of the island kept us all intrigued, but really they didn’t matter it was how they made our heroes interact that mattered.

Did we ever really get a definitive answer as to why the island was travelling through time? I guess we sort of did but even we hadn’t it wouldn’t have bothered me because without that narrative device we’d have never seen Sawyer and Juliet get together and have some of the show’s most beautiful and heartfelt moments.

You have to get past the island and its plethora of mysteries and focus on the characters and how their journeys ended – if you can do that then I don’t see how anyone can be unhappy with how Lost ended its run.

I could honestly go on and on for days about the show, the finale, the actors, the characters and the fans but for now I just want a bit of time for it to all wash over me.

I had to get something down on the blog to get how I was feeling off my chest, but in terms of really evaluating how the series ended, well I think that may take a great deal of time and several repeat viewings.

From where I’m sitting, some 60 hours later the finale of Lost was by no means perfect but it was poignant, poetic and magical – just like the past six seasons have been.

Thank you Lost for six years of sublime television. You shall be missed dearly.

24 Day 8 Death Counter:
Hour 21
x4 Russian operatives – shot and killed by Jack Bauer (JBK x4)

Pavel Tokarev – tortured, then has stomach cut open by Jack Bauer (JBK)

Episode Death Total = 5

Cumulative Season Death Total = 93

(Ongoing) Jack Bauer Kills (JBK) Total = 31

At this point exactly 1/3 of the Day 8 deaths are thanks to Jack Bauer.

Other Musings:

- Back when American Idol had whittled its cast down to the top 24 I picked my top two girls and boys.

Now although poor Lilly Scott didn’t even make the top 12, my other three selections ended up actually being the top 3.

With Casey now gone, it is down to Crystal and Lee for the crown of American Idol 2010. I really hope Lee can do it, like Adam Lambert last year Crystal doesn’t need to win; she’s already got a great career ahead of her now thanks to Idol.

Lee on the other hand I fear needs to win to cement his future effectively. The signs are good for Lee to pull of what a couple of weeks ago would probably have been deemed an upset though. Like last year’s winner Kris Allen, Lee has improved beyond recognition as the season has progressed, whereas Crystal has been consistently good (a la Adam Lambert last year)

Lee has somehow managed to leap frog Crystal to the head of the betting now and is the favourite to be announced the winner on Wednesday night. His popularity is not just down to his unbelievably good voice though, he is humble, shy and self-deprecating – almost the complete antithesis of the somewhat smug Crystal.

I really hope Lee does the business but even if he doesn’t I can’t complain really because I never thought he’d get this far.

- At the start of the year I wrote about a number of adverts – some good, some impossibly annoying. The current state of adverts is definitely leaning towards the annoying side but then came along one ad that turned all that around – this piece of genius from Nike:

- The greatest TV event of the year is this Saturday night – The Eurovision Song Contest 2010. I’m honestly more excited than I was for the Grand National, which really is quite worrying.

For anyone who loves Eurovision and all its campy glory, here is a little video clip to wet your appetite – the greatest entry of the last four years…

Lost....The END

I'll see you in another life, brother.

Y si las respuestas eran como The Across The Sea o Ab Aeterno mejor no saber nada.

24 Series Finale Tribute (Part I)

We'll miss you, Jack.

(Sons of) Anarchy in the UK

I’m currently enthralled by Season 2 of the gritty as hell Sons of Anarchy which I’m watching at UK pace (and by UK pace I of course mean: about 7 months behind the US).

So for anyone getting revved up for season 3, which is now only a couple of short months away from airing in the States, I apologise for how dated this feature must seem.

But as behind as we are in the UK I can’t go through three months of this Shakespearean tragedy in leather without talking about it and extolling its virtues on anyone who will listen.

So after three sublime episodes of Sons of Anarchy’s sophomore year, here are my thoughts on the undisputed best show on TV:

Where we’ve been:

Season 1 ended with bitter ATF agent Stahl setting Opie up as a rat (to be fair, you’d be bitter to if an incarcerated club member blacked both your eyes and broke your nose from inside prison).

With Clay and Tig privately conspiring on how to deal with the ‘rat’ in their midst they ultimately came to the conclusion that Opie need to be taken out. A case of mistaken identity led to Opie’s wife Donna taking the bullets meant for her spouse and SAMCRO was sent spinning into turmoil.

A handful of people know the truth about Donna’s murder: Jax, Hale, Gemma and of course Clay and the man who pulled the trigger: Tig.

Elsewhere at the end of that fantastic first season, Tara and Jax finally decided to make a commitment to each other which has overlapped into season 2’s storylines, with Tara trying to adjust to life as an “old lady” and discovering that its not going to be easy.

Season 2 kicked off with a group of White Supremacists trying to muscle their way in to Charming and using the horrific and harrowing rape and assault of Gemma as a means of causing SAMCRO to implode.

They didn’t bank on the strength of Charming’s resident Lady Macbeth though and although struggling with her ordeal, Gemma is yet to spill the beans to her son and husband.

I mentioned it in an earlier blog but that rape scene at the end of episode 1 was about the most disturbing thing I’ve seen on TV in recent years. It wasn’t that graphic, but the way it was played and shot was just eerie and really had an effect on me.

Opie returned from some me-time and is now concerning club members with his cavalier behaviour – it certainly would appear that the most emotionally complex character on the show has developed a death wish.

The Sons have now joined forces with Otto’s old lady Luann in her porn business, with Bobby Elvis now on board as a book keeper – which should at least serve as some light comedic relief.

But the main focal point of season 2 is the White Power gang, with their leader Zobelle out to destroy SAMCRO at every opportunity and having now seemingly got to Hale things could get very dark very soon for SAMCRO.

Where we’re going:

Obviously, the Elephant in the room at the moment is Gemma’s rape, which she has kept mostly to herself at the moment. Although visibly struggling psychologically, she has yet to spill the beans to anyone.

With her son and husband at increasing loggerheads maybe the most masterfully manipulative woman on the show is just waiting for that moment when this bombshell can have the exact opposite effect that her attackers had hoped and actually bring Jax and Clay back on to the same page.

If and when Gemma reveals all to Jax and/or Clay you know that things are going to get very ugly, very quickly for everyone who had a hand in the attack.

Gemma’s attack has helped her to finally bond and at least find, what for now I will call mutual respect, with Tara. Given how adversarial the two leading ladies of Charming were in season 1 it’s been nice to see them find some common ground.

Tara is a great character and I like seeing her getting more involved in club matters, it has to only be a matter of time before she finds her inner bad ass and really stands up for herself. Her confrontation with the porn star who was throwing herself at Jax last week was definitely a new side to the lovely Doctor, and with Gemma now showing her the ropes as an ‘old lady’, she couldn’t really have a better teacher could she?

Opie’s mindset of getting in deeper than ever in club matters couldn’t be more tragic or heartbreaking. It was his indecision about whether to be in or out that made Clay et al suspicious of him in season 1 and ultimately led to the death of his wife.

With his actual family now destroyed, Opie is relying heavily on his surrogate family – the club, completely oblivious to the fact that some of his ‘brothers’ caused his heartache.

Whenever it finally comes out who was responsible for Donna’s death, and eventually I don’t see how it can’t, I dare say there will be bloodier retribution than for Gemma’s attackers.

Hale’s possible defection to the dark side is another interesting plot thread this season. It seemed as though he and Jax had possibly put their differences aside and found an understanding at the end of season 1/ beginning of season 2, but now after initially shooting down the offer of friendship from Weston and Zobelle he now looks to have sold his soul to finally get one over on SAMCRO.

Elsewhere, Tig’s guilt over what he did to Donna and vicariously Opie seems to be bubbling to the surface, the porn sub plot has allowed us to see Tom Arnold turn up being as brilliantly sleazy as possible and SAMCRO’s perilously poised relationships with the different gangs they deal with remain ready to explode at any moment.

All in all, we have the ingredients for one hell of a remainder of the season and I can’t wait to see how the best damn show on TV unravels.

Sons of Anarchy Season 2 airs on Wednesdays @ 10pm on Bravo in the UK

24 Day 8 Death Counter:

Hour 20

Bledsoe – shot in the head by Jack Bauer (JBK)

Bledsoe henchman – shot by Jack Bauer (JBK)

Bank employee – shot and killed by Dana Walsh

Random person on the street – shot and (presumably) killed by Dana Walsh

Dana Walsh – shot at point blank range by Jack Bauer (JBK)

Episode Death Total = 7

Cumulative Season Death Total = 88

(Ongoing) Jack Bauer Kills (JBK) Total = 26

With Jack hell bent on revenge I can only see the body count increasing and those Jack Bauer Kills racking up as we head into the home straight of the season and, sadly, series.

Destaco también: LaFleur, Follow The Leader, Jack's Swang Song, Jacob's Stabber.

Stargate Universe S01E18 - Subversion "Promo"

True Blood - Season 3 "Promo"

A disfrutar!!

Heroes cancelada seguro y...

en cuanto a series nuevas hay muchas, The Walking Dead, No Ordinary Family, Game of Thrones, Covert Affairs, Undercovers, The Event, Boardwalk Empire, Terra Nova, Hawaii Five-O, The Cape ...

V S01E12 - Red Sky "Season Finale Promo"

Lost S06E16 - What They Died For "Promo"

Lost S06E15 - Across The Sea "Comentario"

The Jacob's boat?

Tic Tac...

Just Getting Warm

Last Wednesday saw the UK debut of a show I’d been excited to see ever since I heard the reaction it was getting from viewers across the pond.

FX’s Justified hit our screens far sooner than I ever expected, given the UK’s track record for being months behind the States, but hats off to the baboons over at Five for hot-shotting this fantastic show in to its schedules on its US-dedicated channel Five USA.

Wednesday night has rapidly gone from a nothing TV night to arguably the best small screen night of the week, with White Collar (Bravo @ 9pm), Sons of Anarchy (Bravo @ 10pm) and now Justified (Five USA @ 10pm) all airing new episodes.

After producing great shows like The Shield, Rescue Me and Sons of Anarchy, anything FX puts out there now, usually makes me sit up and take notice, so Justified was always going to be off to a good start with me; FX really is up there rivalling HBO now for creating some of the rawest most brilliant TV out there – with Showtime and AMC narrowly behind.

I may have had high expectations for Justified, but they were by no means betrayed by an excellent pilot episode that has me eagerly anticipating more.

Based on work from the great Elmore Leonard, Justified had an almost unfair advantage in that it was coming from the mind of one of the best and most influential writing talents of the last few decades.

Leonard’s novels Pronto, Riding the Rap and his short story Fire in the Hole (the latter providing the basis for the plot of the pilot of Justified) are the source material for Justified, all three of which feature the popular character of US Marshal Raylan Givens – the hero of Justified.

How the show will fare once they have completely exhausted Leonard’s work is at this point, having only seen the pilot which was heavily derived from his work, somewhat of a concern; but I am confident that what looks like a highly promising show can not only do justice to its wonderful source material but also expand it to even greater plains.

Raylan Givens’ Cowboy hat in Justified is filled by Timothy Olyphant, a man no stranger to cowboy hats and gun-slinging from his role as Seth Bullock in Deadwood (which I criminally still haven’t seen – but is down to be my next box set purchase).

I’ve always liked Olyphant as an actor, dating back to Scream 2, through to Go and Gone in 60 Seconds, I even found myself rooting for him as the villain in Die Hard 4.0. It’s nice to see him back in a leading role on TV and seemingly having so much fun with it - he’s ice cool as Givens and brings a quiet intensity to the role.

Olyphant aside, the best casting decision the show made was to put Walton Goggins in the pilot as Givens’ former friend-turned nemesis Boyd Crowder. Does anybody do red neck better than Goggins? Shane Vendrell in The Shield was essentially a hill-billy with a badge and he plays Crowder with his usual brand of live wire, manic twitchiness.

Given how the pilot ended for Crowder, I’m unsure of whether we’ll see more of Goggins in the show – it would be a crying shame if we didn’t, given the compelling dynamic they set up between Crowder and Givens in the pilot – all I will say is that they’d better have some equally worthy adversaries for Givens lined up for future episodes if that’s the last we see of Boyd Crowder.

Walton Goggins will soon be seen in the upcoming Predators, which looks pretty awesome, and I can’t wait to see what he does with what will no doubt be another of his trademark characters on the big screen. Hopefully this could finally be Goggins becoming the big star he deserves to be recognised as.

Elsewhere in the pilot episode, I enjoyed seeing Peter Greene back on my screen; I enjoyed a lot of his work in the 90s and his, albeit very short, role was a pleasant surprise. Greene didn’t look to be in great shape, maybe that was the point, but it was definitely shocking to see someone I would consider a big(ish) star offed before the titles.

There was also some nice comedic relief from Crowder’s useless hick gang, Jacob Pitts growing up to play one of the Harlan County Marshals and enough sexual tension between Raylan and a couple of women to keep things interesting for the show going forward in the romance stakes.

As I said previously, it’ll be very interesting watching where the show goes now, beyond Leonard’s material, but there was enough spark shown from this pilot to earmark Justified as a pretender to Sons of Anarchy’s crown as the grittiest show about ‘real’ America currently going out.

Justified Season 1 airs Wednesdays @ 10pm on Five USA in the UK and goes out on FX Tuesdays @ 10pm in the States.

Other Musings:

- I wasn’t sure if I was tripping or not at the time, but I could’ve sworn I saw Huey from the Fun Lovin’ Criminals presenting a show about pets on Sky1 the other day.

I’m all for diversity in one’s career and I could handle Huey on that gash racing show Slips on MTV or whichever ‘music’ channel it airs on but hosting a show about dogs with Liza Tarbuck!? This is the man that gave us Scooby Snacks for crying out loud!

The irony of that last comment is not lost on me.

- I’m not ashamed to admit it, I watch Glee.

Not by choice per se, but the girlfriend watches it and thus so do I. The same goes for her being forced to watch 24, Lost et al, although she does draw the line at True Blood – convincing her it wasn’t that grisly and then someone cooking a human heart soufflé in the first episode she watched with me was rather unfortunate it has to be said.

Back to Glee though and there seems to have been somewhat of a backlash recently, at least in the UK, from people who don’t watch the show who are sick of hearing classic songs ruined by people from the show. I can understand where they’re coming from if I’m honest. The singing is probably my least favourite part of the show and very wrongly those not in the know seem to think that is what the show is all about.

There are also those idiots out there who do watch the show who focus entirely on the songs, ignoring the razor sharp writing, some wonderfully observed characters and some top notch performances from a very well-cast troupe of actors.

If nothing else, what the people who hate on Glee need to realise is that the show is funny, at times: damn funny. The main laughs coming from Jane Lynch’s Sue Sylvester, quite possibly the greatest TV character created this decade and the wonderful supporting character Brittany (Heather Morris) – a ditzy blonde who comes out with some of the greatest one-liners and non-sequitars since Tracy Jordan.

If Jane Lynch doesn’t win some big awards – and I’m talking Emmys and Golden Globes here – for her role a Sue then there is something seriously wrong somewhere.

Seriously, if you haven’t already, try and get past the, at times, impossibly annoying singing and give Glee a chance.

- Lost started its move in to the home straight with a shocker last week, killing off 3 (possibly 4) main characters. Sayid, Sun, Jin and possibly Lapidus were all victims of The Man in Black, and inadvertently Sawyer, as a bomb ripped apart the submarine the survivors were trying to escape on.

No doubt this won’t be the last we see of any of them, but it was still shocking to see so many major characters bumped off in quick succession. It really has woken everyone up to the anything can happen nature of the show as it nears the end I think, and who is next for the chop I can only speculate.

Not that I bought it anyway, but at least we now know Desmond is still alive and my anticipation for next week’s further exploration of Jacob and The Man in Black’s past has now reached fever pitch.

- If I held my TV or not TV Awards this week, I think that the Man of the Year Award would almost certainly be going to Ty Burrell.

His work on Modern Family as Phil Dunphy is just brilliant. He is consistently the funniest thing on a very funny show and deserves far greater recognition for his performance than he’s been receiving.

- Michael Madsen guest starring on 24 was a very welcome addition to the final season of the show.

Season 8 has already seen an impressive list of guest appearances, but Madsen is probably the most high profile. Hopefully that wasn’t the last we’ve seen of him as I’d like to get a greater sense of Jack Bauer’s history before the show finally bows out.

Elsewhere as the clock slowly ticks towards its final tock, Jack has spiralled into full on Tony-mode in his quest for vengeance for Renee’s murder. This was a very wise move by the writers, giving the viewer one last chance to see Jack in the bad-ass mindset that people originally gravitated towards. I am genuinely excited to see what big shocks they have in store for the final crop of episodes.

Speaking of 24…

24 Day 8 Death Counter:

Hour 18

Episode Death Total = 0

Cumulative Season Death Total = 81

(Ongoing) Jack Bauer Kills (JBK) Total = 21

Hour 19

Episode Death Total = 0

Cumulative Season Death Total = 81

(Ongoing) Jack Bauer Kills (JBK) Total = 21

Yes, you read that correctly 2 blood free hours for 24. I get the feeling that won’t be a recurring theme though…
