V S01E06 - Pound of Flesh "Promo"
Lost S06E11 - Happily Ever After "Promo"
Oh, my God!!
V S01E05 - Welcome To The War "Promo"
Happy Town - Season 1 "Promo"
24 cancelada.....Oh my God!!

Official 24 cancellation press release from FOX:

Kill Your Idols - Critiquing the Top 11
I need to make a confession:I like American Idol.
There, I said it. Your mocking is full expected, but I just can’t help it. I don’t know what it is – maybe it’s the fact that the UK equivalents of this type of show are so mind-numbingly horrendous that just to be able to see a show of this ilk with some genuinely talented people on it is a genuine rarity.
Whatever it is, I can’t get enough of American Idol.
I’ve not always been a fan, and I’m by no means an obsessive but ever since I watched David Cook’s winning year I’ve tuned in for the live shows of this ratings phenomenon.
Since I started watching, the show appears to now be in the twilight of its success – judging panel changes (like Paula Abdul has anything better to do) format changes etc. it all smacks of desperation to remain fresh and relevant.
With Cowell now jumping from the sinking ship, it would appear American Idol’s days are numbered; especially now that Cowell is bringing the impossibly dire X Factor format to the US.
For an in depth study of American Idol’s pros against X Factor’s cons, check the archives for last year’s feature ‘American Idol Vs. X Factor’.
Regardless of what is in Idol’s future, we are currently in the midst of another battle to crown the latest American Idol and now we are into the real meaty part of the competition it seemed an opportune time to evaluate the remaining contestants.
I’ve seen many blogs and online features recently ranking the Top 12 (make that 11 now, following rooster wannabe Lacey’s elimination last week) but I’m not going to try and rank the contestants, this is a merely just an opinion piece on what has to be the least inspiring Top 12 since I began watching. With that in mind, purely in alphabetical order, here are my thoughts on the remaining American Idol season 9 contestants based on what I have seen thus far:
Didi Benami – I wasn’t sure about Didi for a couple of weeks, but she won me over with her Fleetwood Mac attempt the week before the big shows started and her effort with the Stones’ Play with Fire last week got a big thumbs up from me so she’s definitely winning me over.
With Lilly criminally not making the Top 12 there’s an opening for my favourite female remaining and if Didi keeps this up she might just be that girl, even if she does have a stupid name.
Crystal Bowersox – Speaking of stupid names, the girl with the greatest surname ever continues to set the early pace even if she isn’t your standard Idol fodder.
Bowersox is by far the most polished performer and in a way that might go against her, because Idol is often about the ‘journey’, needless to say she is now going to have a pretty successful career, but whether she goes on to win as many have already predicted remains to be seen. At present she is a worthy favourite in the betting though.
As for whether I like her, I do, but the type of music she likes is not really my cup of tea and her folksy leanings could potentially alienate many others apart from me, I’m waiting to see how she handles Michael Jackson week or something equally as out of her, I’ll say it even though I hate the phrase, comfort zone… urgh, I feel dirty.
Lee DeWyze – my boy, old nervous Lee. I’ve liked Lee from the start, my head said Casey was the top male contestant but the heart said Lee. Now, I think he has a cracking shot of being the guys’ best hope.
Of course I like Lee because he has the raspy, gargled with gravel rock voice, it also doesn’t help that he sang a Hinder song a while back. He even managed to make that dreadful Owl City song sound decent in the final semi-final week – an achievement in itself.
His nerves are a problem, but I don’t exactly remember David Cook owning the stage during the first couple of weeks, so all is not lost on that front. If there was strength in depth this year I’d be worried that Lee’s personality could see him eliminated earlier than he should be, let’s be honest though, there’s that much dead weight still there he’s practically guaranteed a top 5 spot.
At the moment this is definitely the person I want to see win, as unlikely as that may be.
Andrew Garcia – I didn’t see him perform Straight Up when he did that but my God it must have been the greatest musical performance since Hasslehoff was on the Berlin wall because Kara DioGuardi will just not shut up about it.
Talk about blowing your load too soon.
It’s a shame really, because I want to like Andrew and I get the feeling he has a lot of potential and I could eventually root for him, but he is never going to get out of the shadow of that song and as a result I would say his days are well and truly numbered. His performance of Gimme Shelter last week by the way was fucking heinous, so were he to go soon it would be deserved but I hope he sticks around longer than some of the other schmucks still remaining.
Casey James – I had Casey down as the last man standing a couple of weeks back, but now, I’m not so sure.
He just doesn’t seem all that special, it’s all very samey. I like the guy don’t get me wrong, it’s hard not to, and I have no doubt he’ll do well but he needs to ditch the guitar and switch it up a bit.
It helped that he did All Over Now last week – one of my favourite Stones songs, and he did it well which got him some points back in my eyes, but sooner or later he’s going to have to show some diversity and to be honest I don’t know if he’s got it.
Aaron Kelly – What can I say about this wet lettuce?
This guy is the first of the ‘no business being there’ bunch, how he got through is beyond me.
Zero personality. Zero stage presence. Zero talent. But hey, I suppose David Archuleta made the final on that CV so Aaron could probably win this whole thing.
For me though (channelling my inner Randy Jackson) Aaron is everything that is wrong with American Idol, talent shows in general and the world of entertainment at the moment. Tweeny idiots buying into and voting for talentless saps just because they’re cute – see the success of Justin Bieber, or the fact that Lloyd Daniels reached the top 5 on X Factor if you need further proof.
Michael Lynche – I don’t get the fuss with Big Mike, although I wouldn’t say that to his face.
I like the guy, it’s impossible not to, he was the only person during Hollywood week who had a remotely interesting side story and he is genuinely talented, he’s got bucket loads of charisma, has a great stage presence and a good(ish) voice but reducing people to tears!?
It was Kara DioGuardi who we all know is a moron, but really: tears? He’s not that fucking good and I just don’t get the hype. Again, he’ll do well, but he is that same type of shit R n B singer we’ve seen on this show a hundred times before.
Siobahn Magnus – At the present moment, realistically Siobahn is the only person who can possibly beat Crystal.
And right now, I think I’d kind of like her to… as long as she doesn’t scream again in any of her songs like she did at the end of her very theatrical but very decent version of Paint it, Black last week.
I made the connection to Adam Lambert before the judges said it and that sort of distinction can only help her continue to stand out from the crowd.
Siobahn has a lot going for her with me: she’s quirky (but in a good way), she’s a glassblower by profession which provides me with hours of material, she performed House of the Rising Sun, by choice, the other week and she likes Rob Zombie…
…I wonder if she’s seeing anyone…
Paige Miles – I didn’t see her perform prior to the semi-finals so I’ve missed this potential Cowell keeps talking about, based purely on her live performances thus far though, Paige needs to follow Lacey out of that door.
Laryngitis or not, she is dreadful. Each performance has been more excruciatingly awful than the last and the fact that she outlasted Lilly is a travesty.
My tip for the next one out.
Katie Stevens – not quite as bad as Paige, but equally as undeserving of this spot, Katie is another one just being voted for because she’s young.
Yes, she has a good voice, but she has the personality of a bucket of Horse sick and seriously needs to lighten up a bit. Her decision to sing the Susan Boyle version of Wild Horses was as lame as it was predictable, Katie really needs to sing an up temp modern song rather than dressing like she’s in an episode of Mad Men and singing songs that are about four times older than her.
At the moment, the only thing in Katie’s favour is how stereotypically preppy her brother and his mates are. Every week they show them in the crowd I laugh – I bet one of them is known as (something)-meister.
Tim Urban – Seriously? This guy’s still in. He didn’t even make the top 24 at first but now here he is in the Top 11.
He was fighting a losing battle to begin with, but his reggae version of Under My Thumb last week was just about the worst thing I’ve ever heard, and I heard that Diana Vickers song for the first time the other day.
If this contest has even a shred of credibility, Tim needs to be on the next train back to Texas ASAP, but I have a horrible feeling he might have a couple more weeks in him yet. I can only imagine what song he’s going to massacre next…
American Idol airs in the UK on Wednesdays and Thursdays on ITV2 sandwiched in between the latest Katie Price abomination.
Other Musings:
- If any of you actually listened to me with my Cheltenham tips last week, you might actually have made a small profit. I sadly didn’t listen to my own tips and lost a fortune with not a single winner all week.
Money toilet-flushing aside, it was a great week and for the neutrals and non-gamblers it must have been a brilliant spectacle as always, this was certainly the most unpredictable Cheltenham I’ve had the privilege of taking in.
It was sad to see Kauto Star crash out in the Gold Cup and even sadder to see Denman finish second to Imperial Commander, but to all those writing off the two great former champions I have a feeling they’ll both be back to fight another day and hopefully they both have enough left to come back and hopefully stick it to that pretender to the throne Imperial Commander, Paddy Brennan and Nigel Twisted-Bastard again next year.
I think I’ll just be watching the highlights next year though; you can’t lose money watching highlights.
- On Lost this week we got a Sawyer-centric episode, which is always good but this one was even better than we are used to.
Mainly due to the fact that in the flash-sideways, he and Miles are partners, in a cop sense not a gay sense. Miles has rapidly become my favourite character on the show and his relationship with Sawyer has been a major contributing factor so it was good to see the two of them verbally sparring and sharing some good moments again even if it was away from the island.
I don’t quite understand why they brought Rebecca Mader back as Charlotte to simply be a Sawyer conquest but maybe that will go elsewhere down the line, as I’m sure I saw an interview with Mader in which she said her return was “meaningful”, well that certainly wasn’t.
Another Lost observation was Jodi Lyn O’Keefe turning up. I didn’t even recognise her at first, but how the mighty have fallen. From a starring role on an admittedly steadily declining but no less popular show (Prison Break) to a pre-credits guest spot on Lost. Ouch.
- On 24 my prediction about Tarin was right as it was revealed he was in fact one of Hassan’s enemies, my head hurts from all the twists and turns but wasn’t he in the car with Hassan at the start of the season when Davros tried to blow it up? Was Farhad aware that Tarin was also in on this? There are so many gaping plot holes this season it’s like an Annabelle Chong movie.
Still, even without Almeida and with an impending cancellation looming, 24 remains one of the most enjoyable TV hours of the week.
Check in next week for the 2nd Annual Bill Buchanan Memorial 24 Mid-Season Review.
Speaking of 24…
24 Day 8 Death Counter:
Hour 11
Marcos Al-Zacar – his bomb vest was triggered by Ali and then Jack Bauer pushed him inside an oxygen chamber (sorry Jack, but I can’t give you this one!)
Episode Death Total = 1
Cumulative Season Death Total = 33
(Ongoing) Jack Bauer Kills (JBK) Total = 9
Hour 12
x3 NYPD tactical team members - Sgt. Amis, Martin & Faulkner [assumed] – shot by Tarin Faroush. (as is so often the case with 24 there was no concrete confirmation that I can recall that these 3 were dead, but it certainly didn’t look good)
x2 NYPD officers – shot by Hamid (aka generic terrorist number 4) as they held Tarin Faroush at gunpoint.
Gerrard + 2 other ‘red shirt’ CTU agents – killed in the explosion of the EMP at CTU, I guess this is attributed to Samir and the terrorists as they set the trap for Kayla Hassan to deliver the bomb to CTU.
Episode Death Total = 8
Cumulative Season Death Total = 41
(Ongoing) Jack Bauer Kills (JBK) Total = 9
All in all quite a bloody episode, but Jack Bauer hasn’t killed anyone now for over 4 hours – I’m starting to get worried.
Battlestar Galactica in Singapore

Vemos otra vez a AntiJacob corporeo.
Lost S06E10 - The Package "Promo"
Predator no tendrá otra igual.
Soundtracks - Recomendaciones 9
District 9Compositor: Clinton Shorter
Recomendadas:
TODAS
Green ZoneCompositor: John Powell
Recomendadas:
01 - Opening Book
03 - Traffic Jam
04 - Meeting Raid
07 - Miller Googles
06 - Questions
14 - Chaos - Email

Pirates of the Caribbean At World's End
Compositor: Hans Zimmer
Recomendadas:
02 - Singapore
03 - At Wits End
05 - Up is down
10 - What Shall We Die For
12 - One Day
13 - Drink up me Hearties
Bonus Track:
Gangs of New York - Dionysus (Jocelyn Pook)
Lost 06E08 - Ab Aeterno "Promo"
10. CAPRICA
9. DAMAGES
8. SOUTHLAND
7. GLEE
6. MODERN FAMILY
5. FRINGE
4. FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS
3. LOST
2. BREAKING BAD
1. THE GOOD WIFE

Damages S03E08 - I Look Like Frankenstein "Promo"
Why the Long Face...? Part II - Cheltenham 2010 Preview
Next week it is the 2010 Cheltenham Festival, which for me is one of the sporting, and TV, events of the year. This year’s festival is already shaping up to be better than ever, with Channel 4 extending their brilliant coverage to show five races live from each day of the four day punter’s paradise.
In addition to that, C4 will also have a special edition of their fantastic show The Morning Line each day of the festival as well as a highlights show each night.
For three years now (this will be the fourth) the Cheltenham Festival has taken over my life for this week in March, and every year I seem to get more and more wrapped up in, what is without a doubt, one of the most nerve-shredding spectacles you can experience on your TV.
Last year I live blogged through the week, but if I’m entirely honest it kind of took away from the experience a little, so this year I decided to preview the Festival instead.
(NB: there will be no TV or not TV next week due to the fact that my days will be taken up with watching the Festival and then my nights filled with celebrating, or more than likely, commiserating my efforts that day)
With that in mind, where better to start than Day 1, Tuesday 16th March with the first race of the Festival – The Supreme Novices Hurdle…
The betting for the Supreme Novices has long been dominated by one Horse: the monster that is Dunguib.
Now more than likely, Dunguib (who will undoubtedly one day be a huge star) will win this race, comfortably, but I am very reluctant to back any Horse at Cheltenham at odds on.
So my advice is to bet with trailblazing bookmaker Paddy Power who are offering a ridiculous money back offer that if Dunguib, as expected, wins, they will refund all losing bets.
I’ve already taken advantage and backed the impressive (and unbeaten) Get Me Out of Here @ 6/1… I’ll just have to hope that something else doesn’t win!
My logic here is that anything can happen, and as much as I expect Dunguib to romp home there is no value in backing him, if Paddy Power weren’t offering this deal I’d be a lot less tempted to back something else, but I guess that’s why they’re doing it! It is essentially insurance against the inevitable.
Next up on the Tuesday is the Arkle, and as the betting suggests, it looks to me like a tough call between Captain Cee Bee and Somersby. If pushed to pick one now I’d probably go with Captain Cee Bee, who won the aforementioned Supreme Novices race back in 2008.
The third race on the Tuesday is the William Hill Trophy which is wide open at the moment, I’m not too confident on any of these but again if I had to pick, I’d probably go with Bensalem. I’ve always liked this Horse and he has twice this season given the very impressive Diamond Harry something to think about. That said, I know the Pipe team are big on The Package and there are a few Horses in there that have mixed it up with Denman earlier this season so it really is a difficult one to sort out, at least at the moment.
Next up, the big one: Tuesday’s feature race The Champion Hurdle.
The Champion Hurdle is an absolute clusterfuck of a race at the best of times and this year is no exception. I wouldn’t back anything at short odds, as last year’s 22/1 winner proves, so I have already backed the grey Zaynar @ 15/2 or better.
Up until his shocking 1/14 defeat a couple of weeks back, Zaynar was unbeaten on British soil and was up at the head of the market, yet after that (excusable) defeat on awful ground he has drifted to roughly where we find him now.

All week during last year’s Festival I tipped up Zaynar for the Triumph Hurdle, then inexplicably didn’t back him, of course Zaynar inevitably went on to win the race.
That win though is one of my strongest reasons for fancying him for this year’s race. The Triumph Hurdle was won in 2007 by Katchit who then went on to win the Champion Hurdle in 2008. In 2008 the Triumph was won by Celestial Halo who then went on to come 2nd in last year’s renewal of the Champion Hurdle – so can last year’s Triumph winner continue this form...?
With my only other real fancies Hurricane Fly out indefinitely and Solwhit now a major doubt, I would say yes – I’d be very surprised if Zaynar isn’t occupying one of the place positions when they cross the line, here’s hoping it’s first!
The final televised race on Tuesday is the Cross Country Hurdle, which is always a great race to watch and features the Horse I’m sticking my neck out for and calling my NAP of the week: Garde Champetre.
This Horse loves this race and won it very impressively last season, I’m quite surprised that there is still 9/4 available and will definitely be backing this JP McManus Horse to win what is probably one of the most enjoyable races of the meeting.
Tuesday is rounded out by the Mare’s Hurdle.
Onto Wednesday and Day 2, and first up we have the National Hunt Chase Challenge Cup for Amateur Riders.
Second race of the day on the Wednesday is another Novice Hurdle and is again looking very difficult to sort out.
Third race of the day on the Wednesday though is the RSA Chase, which is a lot easier for me to get stuck into. Should he run, my money will be on Diamond Harry who is currently trading at a ridiculous price of 8/1 in places.
He may have only had two runs over fences, both in relatively small fields, but anyone who saw this Horse canter home under top weight over Hurdles at a muddy Haydock late last year can’t have failed to be impressed and I remain confident that sooner or later this Horse is destined for great things, and following in Denman’s footsteps and winning the RSA could be one of those great things.
Wednesday’s feature race is the Queen Mother Champion Chase and as the odds on Master Minded bids to make it three in a row, I realistically can’t see anything beating him.
Therefore it will probably pay to look each way, as I did last year with Petit Robin (until I decided not to bet in this race) who came third. There are some good horses in there who can chase Master Minded home and I fancy Forpadydeplasterer to fill one of the place spots, currently available @ 10/1 in places, that would give you a modest return on your money should you go the each way route.
The final televised race of the Wednesday is the Coral Cup, a mental Handicap Hurdle that I actually managed to get the winner of the other year, by pure fluke obviously…
Picking something out at the moment is damn near impossible so I won’t even try! Wednesday’s final two races (non-televised, at least with C4) are the Fred Winter Juvenile Novices’ Handicap Hurdle and the Champion Bumper which is usually won by a Willie Mullins trained Horse.
On to Thursday, and the first race of day 3 is the Jewson Novices Handicap Chase, which sees a Horse I was raving about as a hurdler last season: Jered hold an entry as well as my hero from the weekend (yes, I actually backed a winner) the brilliantly named Wogan.
Second race of the day on the Thursday is the Pretemps Final Hurdle. The Paul Nicholls trained Alfie Sherrin currently heads the market and for me that is as good a pick as any.
The Ryanair Chase is race three of the day and is another tough one to sort out with a crop of good horses who could have gone for the Gold Cup in theory holding entries.
Poquelin, who I was very impressed with at the start of the season, currently heads the market with Paddy Power Gold Cup winner Tranquil Sea just behind him. In an interesting form note, this race was won last year by Imperial Commander, who earlier in the season had won the Paddy Power, so that could be a strong argument in favour of the Irish raider Tranquil Sea.
Thursday’s feature is the World Hurdle which again sees a Nicholls trained horse heading the market at odds on in the shape of Big Buck’s. There’s nothing in there that I can see beating the favourite so I’m going to be extremely boring and go with last year’s winner. The fifth, and final, C4 race of the day is the Byrne Group Plate which is another race that I’m not too sure on at the moment. The day’s racing is rounded out by the Kim Muir.
On to Friday and the Festival’s centre piece.
First up on Friday is the aforementioned JCB Triumph Hurdle – at present the market is headed by Alaivan but I am tempted by something at longer odds, the Nicholls trained (see a pattern emerging?) Advisor.
The Vincent O’Brien is up second and I could be interested by 12/1 shot Harry Tricker who ran well earlier in the season at Sandown and then at Cheltenham finishing second behind Champion Hurdle hopeful Khyber Kim.
Third race of the day and another Hurdles race is The Albert Bartlett which just looks too awkward to even attempt to sort out at the moment but should see a local hero round my village get a run out in the form of The Betchworth Kid, which will no doubt keep my brother and I entertained…
Now it’s time to get serious, because Friday’s fourth race is the big one, ‘the decider’, as its being billed: The Cheltenham Gold Cup.
Now here’s my problem with the betting at present: Denman is currently 4/1 in places which is effectively the same or worse than his starting price last year. Last year, Denman had a torrid season and came here without much of a chance; he still ran a huge race and came second though.

So here’s where my beef lies: this season he ran arguably the greatest race I’ve ever seen in the Hennessy and rightly shot to the head of the market with stable mate and reigning champ Kauto Star, who in turn ran a sublime race in the King George on Boxing Day. How then does Denman who ran the race of his life earlier in the season end up drifting to longer odds than last year with an uninterrupted preparation…?
His fall at Newbury?
I would say that all of Denman’s bad runs can be put down to a tangible reason, but you cannot explain his good runs as freak events – this Horse is pure class, it’s why I backed him in the Hennessy under top weight with no proof he was back to his best and it’s why I will more than likely back him in the Gold Cup.
As much as I love Kauto Star, and I do (probably more so than Denman) I just can’t back him at those odds. My head and heart may say that this is Kauto’s race but the gambler in me is saying Denman, at what, to be blunt, are retarded odds.
I can’t see anything else other than the big two winning, but for third spot I would say, providing he is back to the best that saw him land the RSA last year, Cooldine, otherwise Imperial Commander.
The rest of Friday is usually somewhat of an anti-climax, but the TV coverage is rounded out by The Foxhunter Chase, which sees an old Grand National bet of mine Dun Doire involved. The week’s racing is then rounded out by the Conditional Jockey’s Handicap Hurdle and the Grand Annual Chase.
As always the Cheltenham Festival promises to be a thrilling ride and one hell of a week and I for one cannot wait for things to get started and hear that famous roar as the first race gets under way.
The Cheltenham Festival 2010 begins Tuesday 16th March – with coverage on Channel 4 and Racing UK.
Channel 4 has The Morning Line every morning of the Festival, live coverage in the afternoon and a highlights show at night.
Other Musings:
- Just to briefly follow up on last week’s Rescue Me-centric instalment, I have now watched the final 3 episodes of what was a brilliant fifth season of one of the hottest (pun intended) shows out there.
As expected things didn’t end well for Tommy, yet again, with his scheming wife and mistress ruining things with someone he had the potential to be truly happy with, although his revenge on the two of them was particularly sweet.
Things soon went from bad to worse for our hero though as he was shot twice by a rather unhinged Uncle Teddy. I’d had this cliffhanger spoiled so I was fully expecting it, but the way it played out was still surprising. I expected it to be quick and then a fade to black and To Be Continued… but the way it slowly and almost painfully unfolded was a nice touch.
I’m very much in the camp that thinks Tommy will survive, yes, given the nature of the show he could die and remain present, but with only one season to go the last thing we want to see is a ghostly Tommy Gavin. How he gets out of this though is anybody’s guess.
- Over on 24, I’m growing ever more convinced that Tarin is actually going to be a bad guy. They’ve spent so much time playing up what an injustice he has suffered, I can’t help but feel it’s going to be a bait and switch; especially now that Kayla has gone dark and is holed up in a hotel room with him. Hostage anyone?
Maybe I’m wrong and this could just be another Dana snorefest subplot but I can’t see so much time being invested in these two rather minor characters (at present) and their plight if there isn’t going to be something more substantial around the corner.
Elsewhere, I loved the fact that a hospital would leave what must be a very expensive piece of equipment unsecured and unguarded for a terrorist to barricade himself inside.
It was a pleasant surprise to see little Agent Owen survive as well, I thought he had red shirt written all over him… I bet he doesn’t see out the day though. I found Owen’s ineptitude almost funny, CTU’s supposed to be this last line of defence against terrorists, yet their second in command field agent looks like he’s about to pee his pants every time someone looks at him funny.
Speaking of 24…

Lost S06E08 - Recon "Promo"

Hell on Wheels
Thanks to garbage UK TV scheduling, I’m currently in the midst of enjoying the sublime fifth season of the fantastic Rescue Me on Region 1 DVD.For some inane reason, after showing the first three seasons, Sky1 inexplicably dropped Rescue Me and even more inexplicably: no one else picked it up – not even FX who make the fucking show in the US!
So I’ve had to rely on imported DVDs to get my fix for the past two seasons, and although the show seemed to lose its way a little and season 4 wasn’t Rescue Me’s finest hour, I can say almost unequivocally that season 5 could be the best season the show has produced to date.
Funnier than ever and, at times, darker than ever, Season 5 has had me laughing harder and longer than most pure comedies out there and Rescue Me is by no means pure comedy, this is one of the blackest shows on TV and can amp up the tension to near 24 levels when it wants.
The writer’s strike threw a spanner in the works for the show’s plans the other year but boy did they come back with a vengeance for season 5, with almost twice as many episodes as previous years and a renewed focus and vigour that has made the show essential viewing once again.
Upon its debut, the promos we got over in the UK, wrongly, made it seem as though Rescue Me was going to be about the aftermath of 9/11, and although the considerable shadow of that fateful day hangs over the crew of 62 Truck and set in motion many of the events that have underpinned the series, this is a show about so much more than dealing with September 11th.
The first three seasons were seriously good, thirteen episodes a season meant that the show moved at a blistering pace at times, main characters died, the crew seemed to suffer personal tragedy after tragedy and the domestic squabbles both at home and between the ‘brothers’ in the firehouse were never-ending, all the while the crew battled uncontrollable blazes across New York.
You’d be forgiven for thinking that all that would make the show a tough watch, and yes, at times Rescue Me can plumb to some pretty shocking depths, but for the most part this is one of the sharpest, funniest shows on TV at the moment.
The only show I can think of that can even be considered a peer to Rescue Me is the majestic Californication. Both shows seamlessly transition between tear-jerking moments, intense drama filled with personal anguish and laugh out loud moments of comedy.
Dialogue-wise, there is no disputing that Rescue Me and Californication are the best scripted shows on television. The banter and one-liners between these characters is so good it really is hard to believe that they are actually scripted, although no one is that quick-witted in real life.
Enough about the show in general though, the main focus of this piece is season 5 which I am about to complete, with three episodes remaining.
Season 4’s drop in quality can be attributed to the interference of the impossibly annoying (but understandably necessary) writer’s strike that ruined TV for not only months but years and to the fact that Tommy Gavin stopped drinking.
Denis Leary’s Tommy soon hit the bottle again as season 5 progressed and things have been a lot more interesting ever since. When Tommy is sober he doesn’t see ghosts so that meant we have been deprived of his dead cousin and brother of late (the brilliant James McCaffrey and Dean Winters respectively) but his return to the bottle has meant we’ve ever had plenty of Jimmy and Johnny this year, albeit in their ghostly form.
It’s been almost impossible to avoid spoilers given how long ago this season aired Stateside so I know that Tommy’s return to drinking, more specifically the fact that he also got his extended family drinking again, does eventually have dire consequences; which is good, because up to where I am in the season his blatant alcoholism seems to have made everyone happy again.

Rescue Me is by no means the Tommy Gavin show though, sure Leary’s character is asked to do most of the heavy lifting when it comes to what has to be the most dysfunctional extended family on TV and the unimaginable pain and torment this man has suffered through his losses, but Rescue Me has a ridiculously good cast and has shaped some brilliantly observed and well-developed characters over its five seasons to date.
While Franco and Mike haven’t really had much to do this year (boxing and singing respectively) Garrity has become the show’s most valuable supporting player.
Garrity’s illness gave him the chance to be seen as much more than comic relief to the Rescue Me audience. Sure, he’s still dumb as a box of rocks, but Steven Pasquale has added another dimension to Sean this season. The song and dance numbers he was dreaming about were a brilliant, if somewhat bizarre interlude to the episodes where he had nothing more to do than lie in a hospital bed and Pasquale showed off a surprisingly good singing voice.
Since his recovery, Sean has become somewhat of an asshole but in a good way, previously walked all over by everyone around him and often too stupid to realise, the new selfish Sean is finally taking care of himself and it’s been great to see.
That’s not to say that Garrity has stopped with the idiocy, as his orange dick proved (more on that later).
Lou has also stepped up big time this season, his banter with Tommy has always been one of the show’s highlights but for season five this really has been off the charts.

He and Tommy living together and competing over a woman and then clashing over Lou’s relationship with a different woman gave John Scurti something meaty to sink his teeth into rather than just verbally sparring with his old friend Leary.
That said, Leary and Scurti’s friendship off screen is clearly visible on screen, with Lou and Tommy squabbling like brothers most of the time – any time these two are in a scene together it usually strikes gold.
The real revelation this season for me though has been Michael Zegen as Damien. Recurring in previous years as Tommy’s nephew and godson, his decision to become a fireman coupled with his Mother’s over-protectiveness led to him being stationed with our heroes at 62 truck, which meant we have seen a great deal more of him this season and he has fit in perfectly.
With a plethora of great one liners, Damien has been involved in some of the season’s (at least the second half) funniest moments – his discussion with Mike about what a ‘hot lunch’ is had me almost laughing myself into a hernia and would have undoubtedly been the funniest moment of the season if not for the episode entitled ‘Carrot’.
If the title of the episode didn’t give it away, then the episode featured Garrity showing Mike, and then subsequently everyone else in the firehouse, his penis, which had turned a bright shade of orange. If the explanation was slightly convoluted it didn’t matter as we got a good five minutes of one of the funniest scenes I’ve seen on TV in a long while. The extended season has given Rescue Me license to spend five minutes on a comedy set piece as above or alternatively on a meandering soliloquy from a character, and although not in-keeping with the blistering pace of earlier seasons it has added another dimension to the show.
If the under-use of Lenny Clarke has been a slight bone of contention this season, it has more than been made up for by Adam Ferrara getting a great deal of screen time as Needles, again an old friend of Leary’s, the relationship off screen clearly translates on screen and Needles has become one of my favourite characters. Hopefully Ferrara will be bumped up to regular for next season, along with Larenz Tate as Black Shawn, who has also gone from strength to strength this season.
I’ve previously waxed lyrical about Michael J. Fox’s guest appearance, but Maura Tierney may just have given him a run for his money as she plays against type as a mysterious love interest for Tommy.
Rescue Me is definitely back to its incendiary best: poignant, gut-wrenching, emotionally resonating, tense and hilarious all rolled into one smoky New York package peppered with brilliant running gags (Leary’s myriad look-alikes). This is a show that can hang with the best of them; and for me is up there with Californication, Sons of Anarchy, Mad Men and Breaking Bad as one of the five best shows on TV.
You might not be able to tune in, but do yourself a favour and grab the DVDs – because this show should be mandatory in everyone’s TV schedules.
Other Musings:
- American Idol has returned and although I’d been spurning the show, now we’ve entered the good part of the competition, I’m very much getting into things.
I was very surprised to see 70s throwback Tyler Grady eliminated last week, but if I had to make a prediction for a winner at this stage (I actually picked this guy before the final 24 were announced) I’d have to go with Casey James, that’s what my head is saying, my heart though says Lee DeWyze.
For the girls, I’d say that Lilly Scott and Crystal Bowersox have been the two that impressed me the most so far, whether they (Crystal in particular) have what it takes to go all the way though I’m not sure.
- I’d heard good things about a show called Nurse Jackie, so I thought to myself “must remember to catch that if and when it’s shown over here”, then as I watched the Winter Olympics coverage the other night it was on straight after!
Sadly though I’ve missed the entire season and only caught the finale – way to go BBC!
From what I saw though it looks like Nurse Jackie is deserving of the plaudits it’s been receiving. Dark, funny and starring the delectable Edie Falco – what more could you ask for!? And if that’s not enough for you, it’s even got Paul ‘Ryan Chappelle’ Schulze in it.
- Olivia Lee should really just stick to looking reasonably hot, because her new show on Comedy Central looks gash as. Dirty, Sexy, Funny? It should just be renamed Dirty, Sexy…
TV Moment of the Week:
- Okay so technically this was last week, but as Sci-Fi decided to purge itself of Dollhouse last week I’ve only just managed to catch up.
It was a joy to see Enver Gjokaj get to trot out his Fran Kranz impression again as his character was turned into Topher 2.0 for a second time. Gjokaj has Kranz (as Topher)’s mannerisms down pat and it really is an impressive impersonation, whether Gjokaj has a talent for impressions or whether he just picked up on Kranz from being around him so much remains to be seen, but this was one of the highlights of the series first time round and it was nice to revisit it one last time before the show ended.
In all, the show built up to a great finale, even if Boyd’s turn to the darkside did kind of come out of nowhere.
It would have been great to see his deception slowly revealed over a couple of seasons but needs must. It’s been nice to see the return of some of the shows familiar faces for the run in, in particular Reed Diamond as Laurence Dominic, who got to redeem himself somewhat.
The final episodes had all the trademarks of a Whedon finale – beloved characters died, people got blood splattered on their faces and, as I’ve already hit on, there was redemption for some and duplicities revealed in others. Thankfully Whedon and crew were given enough time to wrap this up as best they could, so we actually got a satisfactory conclusion to what has been one of the most hit and miss shows I’ve ever experienced.
Farewell Dollhouse, you will be missed (sort of).
