Heroes S04E03 - Ink "Comentario"

Me gusta, sí!, Heroes me está gustando. Historias normales, personajes normales, y todo llevado con un cierto criterio. Nuevas melodías que te adentran mucho más en el capítulo. Estoy viendo un renove, cierto que es demasiado pronto para decirlo, pero lo estoy viendo, todo es normal y nada sobrepasa esta normalidad.

Me gusta Peter, porque no piensa ni hace cosas sin sentido. Me gusta Parkman, buen dúo con Sylar, al que lo tiene cogido por los hue.. puede manipular su mente, me gusta. Claire está como más, 1ª temporada. A ver que historia sacan de esta nueva amistad. La escena del parque me he encantado, ese colorido, con el nuevo personaje, Emma, que tiene el poder de ver los sonidos, poder ciertamente sopresivo. Parece que su historia se mezclará con Peter. Lo sé, esperemos que no sea la nueva Caitlin y acaben en el futuro.

Pero lo mejor de momento de este 5º Volumen es Samuel, su presencia ya engancha aunque aún no sabemos el camino por el que se dirije. Ahora le ha dejado una tatoo-brújula a Peter en el antebrazo.

Bueno todo esto es gracias a la no presencia de Hiro y Mohinder. Heroes pinta bien para los próximos 16 capítulos, aunque la cosa no va muy bien en audiencias, solo 5.8 millones de espectadores. Bueno de momento tenemos entretenimiento para los martes.

Heroes S04E04 - Acceptance "Promo"

Weeds - Season 3,4 and 5

Puesto al día de las 5 temporada de Weeds. Un resumen general. Como ya dije antes, la 1ª y la 2ª me parecieron soberbias y a este pack se une también la 3ª, con el fascinante U-Turn, que personaje!. En esta temporada sigue siendo Weeds, luego ya pasamos a la 4ª, con cambio de residencia de la família Botwin y es aquí, en mi opinión donde Weeds cambia. Destacar que el crecimiento de Shane, es un punto en contra para la serie. Ya se le ve como un personaje más mayor y sus gestos y habladurías cambian con respecto al Shane de Agrestic. Otro punto en contra es la incorporación de Esteban Reyes, un personaje que no me atrae para nada, creo que es también el actor que no me transimte nada, y las tramas no tiene el nivel de las temporadas anteriores, Doug Wilson no es el que era. Ya en la última, la 5ª, de nivel muy inferior incluso a la 4ª, se habla mucho del comportamiento de Nancy, un poco raro sí, dejar tan apartados a sus hijos por estar con Esteban, se entiende?. Y en cuanto al cliffhanger final, pues ni punto de comparación con los 2 primeros.

Esperaremos a ver como nos sorprenden en la 6ª temporada, ¿última?, pero creo que si siguen en Ren Mar, no creo que les favorezca.

Dollhouse S02E01 "Comentario"

¿Renovar Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles o renovar Dollhouse? y la FOX se decantó por ésta última. ¿Mereció Dollhouse su renovación? para mí, lo único que se puede destacar de la 1ª temporada, son los capítulos Briar Rose, Omega y Epitaph One, por lo demás una serie de lo más normalita. O pudo ser renovada por que el nombre de su director pesa mucho.

El primer capítulo de esta segunda temporada, Vows, me ha parecido bastante aburrido. Creo que la historia no engancha. Echo no engancha, no hay ningún personaje que te enganche. Ni tampoco ninguna historia. En cuanto al capítulo hemos podido ver la despedida de la Dra. Saunders (que ha fichado por la serie Happy Town que se estrena el año que viene) y poco más. Bueno aparte de un cara a cara de Lee Adama y Helo Agathon. Y que Echo tiene nuevo "cuidador", el agente Paul Ballard que juntos ayudarán a encontrar su verdadero yo a Echo, Caroline.

¿Hacia donde se dirigirá Dollhouse? espero que esto mejore, porque yo me he entretenido más con la vuelta de Heroes. Por cierto, han quitado 6-7 minutos menos, ha sido por algo?

Flash Forward S01E01 "Comentario"

Flash Forward la nueva apuesta de la cadena ABC. Visto el piloto, he de decidir que me ha encantado. Unos muy buenos 43 min, narrados de manera perfecta, introduciéndonos de manera clara el argumento de esta nueva serie y a los nuevos personajes. 43 minutos donde han explicado lo que quieren hacer con un muy buen ritmo. 2:17 min donde todo el planeta se desvanece, tiempo en el cual, han podido ver el futuro de sus vidas. Unos con más futuros interesantes, otros no tanto y otros que no han visto nada. Esa es la premisa de Flash Forward. Intentar saber como llegan a esa vida futura, donde todos tienen algo en común, el 29 de abril de 2010. Todos los flash forwards han apuntado a esa Fecha, ¿por qué esa y no otra? Lo veremos.

En cuanto a los personajes, de momento parecen correctos, claro está que Sonya Walger está bien siempre. No hay demasiados protagonistas principales, unos 10, sin contar a Dominic Monaghan, que seguro que lo veremos pronto. Mark Benford (agente del FBI), Olivia Benford (esposa de Mark y cirujana), Demetri Noh (agente del FBI y compañero de Mark), Bryce Varley (médico compañero de Olivia), Janis Hawk (agente FBI), Stanford Wedeck (Director FBI), Aaron Stark (trabajador departamento de Agua y Energía y amigo de Mark), Nicole Kirby (estudiante y canguro de la hija de Mark y Olivia) y Charlie Benford (hija de Mark y Olivia).

Parece ser que la historia girará en torno al flash forward de Mark Benford, el agente del FBI, que seguramente tiene que ver con el acontecimiento que les ha pasado. Por tanto, habrá una historia de fondo, gracias por dios que no tiene pinta de procidemental. No sé si los flash forwards de los otros personajes, interferirán en esta historia principal, o crearán historias diferentes con respecto a la principal. Pero la pregunta que todos nos hacemos es, si los flash forwards datan de la fecha 29 de abril de 2010, de que tratarán las otras temporadas? This is the question. Tiempo al tiempo, a ver que nos deparan los guionistas.

Y como dijo Sonya Walger en una entrevista, esto no es Lost, y las respuestas llegarán más rápido.

¿Alguien quiere ver el Flash Forward de Charlie?, porque yo sí, miedo me da.

Es que no creo que baje nunca el listón, The Big Bang Theory ha vuelto, y como siempre, con los 4+1 magníficos. Es que todos te hacen sacar la carcajada, de un modo o otro, es imposible que cuando hable Wolowitz no te rías. ¿Es que hay algo mejor que el dúo Penny-Sheldon en pantalla en estos momentos?

El momento Darth Vader es brutal, o el Mario & Luigi también. No he podido encontrar el número de capítulos para esta temporada. Espero que se muevan entre los 20 y algo.

Ya queda menos para poder disfrutar de las nuevas aventuras de la Dra. Helen Magnus & Company. Estreno el Viernes 9 de Octubre 09.

TV Geek Awards "Premios"

Ayer se dieron a conocer los resultados de los TV Geeks Awards. Me alegré el día que los anunciaron, porque podríamos ver realmente los gustos de la gente, tener una variedad de series para poder votar y poder observar unos resultados justos.

El resultado me ha sorprendido bastante, creí que Battlestar Galactica tendría por fin un reconociemiento, pero otra vez no ha sido así. Solamente un premio como mejor Acriz de Drama para Mary McDonnell y nada para Edward James Olmos, Katee Sackhoff, ¿¿donde está??, Demasiado Lost para mi gusto, que seguramente el año que viene también ganará en casi todos los apartados y seguramente lo hubiera hecho, si se hubieran hecho anteriormente a ésta. Esto es lo que hace que una serie sea más conocida que otra y sea más seguida. Como se puede obviar la Finale de Battlestar Galactica?. Pero estos eran unos premios justos, y la gente lo ha decidido así.

Es mejor Emily Deschanel que Glenn Close?, pero a lo mejor si es más conocida su serie. Tina Fey mejor que Mary-Louise Parker?, Alyson Haniggan mejor que Kaley Cuoco?, etc. Bueno, nunca estaremos de acuerdo en el tema premios, siempre habrá algo que nos descontente.

En general han sido unos premios donde las series más famosas han prevalecido sobre las menos conocidas o menos vistas o con menos seguidores. Esta es mi humilde opinión.

True Blood - Season 1 (escena eliminada)

Interesante escena eliminada de True Blood de la 1ª temporada. ¿Quién se esconde detrás de los arbustos? No tiene pinta que sea Maryann. ¿Personaje que aún no hemos visto y posiblemente veamos?

Heroes S04E01-02 - Orientation/Jump-Push-Fall "Comentario"

Y ha tenido que llegar Robert Knepper, como Samuel Sullivan a levantar los 3 últimos volúmenes de Heroes y creo que lo ha hecho satisfactoriamente. No ha mostrado demasiado aún, pero promete y mucho, hasta da más miedo que Sylar (¿Soy el único de este planeta al que ya no le atrae Sylar?). Han tenido que borrar todas las piezas del volumen anterior, y Danko ha sido el primero, a manos de Darth Maul, el actor Ray Park. Buena escena contra Strauss. En este Vol.5 las historias parecen más interesantes, sí!, hasta la de Hiro (si lo juntas con Samuel) y Claire pueden dar mucho juego. También pueden salir muchas cosas entre Matt y Sylar, esperando que Sylar no vuelva a lo mismo de siempre, matar, matar y matar. En cuanto a Peter, me gusta, el camino seleccionado por los guionistas. Por otro lado la pareja Tracy-Noah pueden deleitarnos con muchas sorpresas, donde se puede observar un cierto feeling.

En resumen general, buena premiere de esta temporada 4, donde se avecinan buenas historias, solamente hay que ver el final del capítulo. Y donde solo he podido encontrar una incoherencia, van mejorando, ¿Cuándo Claire ha acabado el instituto para poder acabar yendo a la Universidad?

Espera que abro mi neverita de Battlestar Galactica. ¿Qué temporada te apetece?

Emmys 2009

Ayer decidí quedarme a ver la Gala de los Emmys 09 por el canal Sony. Comenzó a las 2 en punto de la noche. Explicaré poco ya que solo aguanté 1h:30min. Vaya coñazo de gala. A parte que los dobladores eran malísimos, sobre todo la que traducía al sector femenino. No hace falta que actues, solo dobla!! Cada 2 entregas de premios publicidad. Cuando te mostraban los nominados no te daba tiempo a saber quienes eran, y encima habían un montón, claro y la traductora no le daba tiempo a decirlos.
Las cámaras solo enfocaban al público cuando decían a los nominados. En resumen una gala muy sosa hasta donde yo vi. Y esperaba con ansias que se subiera a recoger el premio Jim Parsons pero no, se lo dieron a Alec Baldwin, el año pasado también. O que también subiera Mary-Louise Parker.

Yo no sé que tienen estas 2 series, 30 Rock y Two And A Half Men, que no les encuentro la gracia por ningún lado. Me alegro por Michael Emerson que tendría que ganar un premio cada año y también por Cherry Jones por su papel de presidenta en 24. Y como no, Glenn Close segundo Emmy consecutivo y gracias a Damages.

Y como mejor serie, Mad Men, que creo que estuvo a un paso de la cancelación, pero ahí está cada año. Sólo deben ver esta serie las personas que votan. Supongo que el año de Lost será el que viene o no, pregúntenselo a Battlestar Galactica.

Robotech...a la venta

Robotech, una de las mejores series de anime de los años 80 y de la historia, se pone por fin a la venta en España y será a partir del día 8 Octubre.

District 9......el bombazo del 2009

District 9: una maravilla, espectacular film dirigido por Neill Blomkamp, que en realidad es animador 3D, y producida por el ya conocido Peter Jackson. 112 minutos que pasas cogido a la butaca del cine, donde el nivel no decae en ningún momento del film. Una película que solo ha contado con el presupuesto de 30 millones de dólares, una sexta parte de lo que costó Transformers 2, donde el robot alienígena que surge, no le tiene nada que envidiar a los robots de Bay ni a los robots de Terminator Salvation.

Actores no conocidos que aún le dan más mérito a la cinta y que hacen que no se infle el poquito presupuesto. Sharlto Copley (Wikus Van De Merwe) hace un buen papel como personaje principal, que será por cierto Murdock (A-Team) en la gran pantalla. Muchos de los actores que salen, extrenan currículum, ya que es su primera película.

Efectos especiales grandísimos y efectivos. Esa nave colgando del cielo es espectacular. Los aliens-bichos parece que sean reales. Y las escenas de acción son dignas de un buen trabajo. También una correctísima banda sonora de un no conocido Clinton Shorter.

En resumen una magnífica película de acción donde por fin, detrás se tiene un buen guión y que es llevado perfectamente bien. Se echaba de menos cine de verdad. Una nota de 9 de mi parte.

Para la gente que ya la ha visto, dejo el corto donde se inspiraron para hacer la película (dirigido por Neill Blomkamp también), ya que en principio no estaba planeado hacerla, porque tanto Peter como Neill estaban destinados a realizar la pelícual de Halo, pero que finalmente fue rechazada.

True Blood - Season 2 Finale

Y finalmente se acabó True Blood. Una Finale un poco descafeinada para mi gusto. Todo la resolución de tramas mostrada con demasiada prisa, lo que me llego a recordar la finale de Damages - Season 2. La desaparición de Maryann un poco sosa, pero ya mostrándonos los nuevos frentes abiertos, Jessica desalocada por Bon Temps (puede dar mucho juego), Jason habiendo matado a una persona, Eggs en este caso, bien por el personaje, no lo soportaba, (no creo que de mucha cosa esta historia), una Tara desamparada por la muerte de su novio (espero una buena historia para ella para el próximo año). Y la trama principal, la desaparición de Bill a manos, seguramente de Eric.

Esperaremos el verano que viene a True Blood, porque la serie me encanta, me entretiene y me hace pasar un buen rato.

Pero antes disfrutaremos de las palabras de Alan Ball sobre la 3ª Temporada:

" I can tell you that we will meet the Vampire King of Mississippi and he will have an agenda with the Vampire Queen of Louisiana. We will meet werewolves, some other weres that aren’t wolves but they are not shifters either. (Laughs.) We are going to meet Sam’s blood relatives, we’re going to meet probably the nastiest vampire we’ve met yet and Lafayette might get some action, might have a little love story of his own. "

Five Reasons to Get Excited About TV Again…

I just couldn’t stay away!

I know I said last week that TV or not TV would be taking a break until the beginning of October but there is so much going on Stateside as we head into the gold-mine that is the Fall season that I just had to return to the blog once more before my hiatus.

In a little under two weeks I head to America myself and actually may be lucky enough to catch some of the shows that I’m about to big up and if I do, needless to say, I’ll be waxing lyrical on here.

After the recent lull in decent shows on the box the Fall season in the US is about to kick off and rescue us all from the boredom of dull TV, so to celebrate that I decided to give you five reasons why you should start to get excited about TV again:

5. Curb Your Enthusiasm Season 7

The often imitated, never emulated ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’ returns for a seventh season in a few short weeks and I for one cannot wait.

When we last left Larry he had split from Cheryl and seemingly found happiness with Loretta Black (played by Vivica A. Fox).

If I was a betting man which we all know I am, I’d wager that this new found happiness won’t be lasting long for Mr. David, but as long as the genius that is Leon Black (JB Smoove) returns for season 7 then that’s all that matters; Leon was a revelation last year and gave us quotable line after quotable line.

It seems that ‘Curb’ has been off our screens far too long and Larry’s return –to actually give us something funny on TV again – cannot come soon enough.

4. Community

Has been compared to the late, great ‘Arrested Development’ in many quarters, and revolves around a lawyer who has to go back to law school after his degree is deemed invalid.

Joel McHale (host of ‘The Soup’) takes the lead and the show will follow his exploits at community college (hence the title). McHale’s Jeff will encounter a selection of weird and wonderful characters throughout the show, including ‘The Daily Show’s John Oliver, comedy flavour of the month Ken Jeong (the naked guy from ‘The Hangover’) and Chevy Chase (Chase in actually funny shocker!?).

I have high hopes for this one, we’ve been lacking a good ‘traditional sitcom’ for a while now and hopefully ‘Community’ could fill that void.

3. Sons of Anarchy Season 2

Anyone who’s read this blog before will know exactly how I feel about this brilliant, brilliant show that debuted last fall season, well ‘Sons of Anarchy’ kicked off its sophomore year last week and promises to be darker and grittier than ever.

The season begins with SAMCRO’s matriarch Gemma being gang-raped by a gang of White Supremacists – the Sons’ new enemies, so anyone who’s seen the show can imagine how that’s going to go down once Clay finds out.

Away from that drama, there are still plenty of unanswered questions from last season, most notably the botched hit that claimed the life of Opie’s wife Donna and the ramifications that will have for the club. Ryan Hurst was awesome last season as Opie and has been promoted to series regular this time around so we should get hopefully get some meaty storylines involving him.

Elsewhere, the undisputed star of the show, Charlie Hunnam as Jax, has his head firmly screwed on now and looks all set to challenge Clay for control of SAMCRO – the fuse has well and truly been lit for an explosive second year for the best new show to hit our screens in years.

2. Bored to Death

Two words have made me practically ejaculate over this show: Zach Galifinakis.

Yes, the most criminally unrecognised funnyman on Earth makes his return to TV in this Jason Schwartzman-starring comedy that also features Ted Danson.

Basic premise seems to be that Schwartzman’s Jonathon Ames (the show’s actual creator) an alcoholic, pot-smoking, thirty-something, man-child novelist who after getting dumped by his girlfriend takes out an ad on Craigslist as a Private Detective – well we all grieve in different ways.

Knowing nothing about being a Private Dick, Ames’ only source of experience is his stash of noir crime novels but he decides to take on the cases as they come in anyway.

A host of great guest stars are lined up to appear in the first season of this latest HBO Original, the very underrated Patton Oswalt, the funniest woman alive Kristen Wiig and Oliver Platt to name but three.

And if all that doesn’t make you want to watch, it’s got Zach Galifinakis and Ted fucking Danson in it!

1. FlashForward

Possibly the most hyped new show since ‘Lost’ began five years ago, ‘FlashForward’ has already been secured by Channel 5 in the UK before an episode has even aired in the States; and in an unprecedented move of intelligence, Five are actually going to broadcast the show days after it airs across the pond.

The show sounds very ‘Lost’-like and even shares a couple of actors, but when you consider it’s on the same network and ABC are no doubt hunting for a replacement for their Golden Goose then you can understand where the similarities may lie.

Basically, for some unknown reason, all of mankind experiences a premonition of their life six months down the line for a total of 2 minutes and 17 seconds. When the event is over, many people are dead in car accidents and plane crashes etc. those who survived are left wondering what it all means and whether they can change the future that they saw, as most of them see a future that they don’t necessarily want (well it wouldn’t be much of a show if they saw a happy one would it?)

The show boasts a nice cast already and with more actors scheduled to join as we go along (including ‘Lost’s Dominic Monaghan) it promises to be one hell of a show. The principal cast includes Joseph Fiennes as the lead if you will, ‘American Pie’s John Cho (MILF!), Gabrielle Union and the much underrated Brit actor Jack Davenport. Bizarrely, it is also reported that ‘Family Guy’ mastermind Seth MacFarlane has been cast in a recurring role.

From the pen of ‘The Dark Knight’ scribe David S. Goyer and Brannon Braga (formerly of ‘24’) based on the Robert J. Sawyer novel of the same name ‘FlashForward’ promises to become the most addictive new show we’ve seen in a long, long time.

TV Moment of the Week:

Has been the blood-filled finale of ‘The Wire’. As the reduced fifth season has drawn to a close, a number of characters have met their maker, most shockingly Omar.

The past few months, experiencing this brilliant show from start to finish have been a real treat and it’s a shame that the BBC’s run of the show is now coming to an end.

The box sets are still out there though so anyone who has not yet immersed themselves in ‘The Wire’ still can, and really should – do you really want to say that you missed out on the greatest TV show of the past decade?

Weeds

Todo el mundo la ve, habla de ella y a todo el mundo le gusta, pues me dije, vamos a verla. Y así empezó mi viaje con Weeds. Que puedo decir a estas alturas, un poco tarde ya, de esta magnífica serie. De momento solo he visto las 2 primeras temporadas y puedo decir que esta serie es genial. A parte de que tiene unos cliffhangers de esos que dices, que grande son los guionistas, lo que más me gustan son los actores. Nancy Botwin, la protagonista de la serie es brutal, no había visto nada de la actriz Mary-Louise Parker pero puedo decir que es buena, muy buena, sobre todo cuando le entran esas rabietas. Andy Botwin su cuñado, es la risa permanente. Doug Wilson, de lo mejor de la serie, con las salidas que tiene cuando está en una conversación. Isabelle Hodes, personaje muy bien protagonizado y que a veces te saca de tus casillas y que hace una magnífica pareja de humor con su marido Dean y su hija Isabelle. Y hasta el hijo de Nancy te puede hacer partirte de risa, Shane Botwin, un niño bastante complicado y opuesto a su hermano Silas que también tiene sus cosas.

No olvidar los personajes de Conrad, me gusta su acento cuando habla, Heylia James, con su egocentrismo de soy la mejor, Sanjay, por lo poco que sale suficiente para que te guste desde el primer momento, y como no de Lupita que cuando habre la boca, su sarcasmo te maravilla.

Y después de ver a estos personajes, dices no pueden haber más, y de repente te sacan a Kat (Zooey Deschanel), a parte de que me encanta la actriz, el personaje es brutal, alocado perdido, pero que por lo visto no dura mucho en la serie.

Bueno, visto que la 5ª temporada parece que ha bajado de nivel, según he leído por muchos blogs, espero que siga entreteniendo como lo sabe hacer, porque es una de las mejores comedias junto con The Big Bang Theory.

Trick 'r Treat - DVD Trailer

No entiendo el No-Estreno de esta película en cines. Desde el 2007 que tenía previsto estrenarse y finalmente al DVD que se ha ido.

Trick 'r Treat es una cinta de terror ambientada en Halloween con un estética/homenaje a las películas de terror de los años 70 en la que se mezclan vampiros, hombres lobo, asesinos y fantasmas. Como papeles protagonistas del film tenemos a Anna Paquin, Brian Cox, Leslie Bibb.

Emmys 2009

Ayer haciendo zapping en nuestro fabuloso TDT, fui a dar con el canal Sony. Y justamente estaban anunciando la gala de Los Emmys de este año. Si, podremos ver la gala en directo, en versión original y con traducción simultánea, según nos informan en su web. Pues creo que lo veré, no por las "repetitivas nominaciones", sino porque nunca he visto una gala de estas dimensiones, rollo Oscars o Emmys. Y también porque seguro que rondan por allí bastantes actores famosos de nuestras series preferidas.

Pues esperaremos a su estreno el Domingo día 20 a las 2:00AM en el canal Sony. Y recordad que lo podéis encontrar en nuestra fabulosa Televisión Digital Terrestre ¬¬.

Strictly Come Dancing Season Sevennnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn Preview

After a hectic Bank Holiday weekend, I was struggling for a topic to cover this week in the blog, so I decided to revisit one of my musings from last week and delve deeper beyond the original thoughts I had about the upcoming seventh season of my favourite drunken, post-pub TV fodder ‘Strictly Come Dancing’.

Here, I will be evaluating each contestant in this year’s show individually and being the gambling man that I am, giving you my odds on them winning.

‘Strictly’ has been in the news for all the wrong reasons over the past few months with the sacking of Arlene Phillips, and people have been focussing on the whole age thing, but no one seems to have said what everyone is actually thinking, and that is that Arlene Phillips is one of the most irritating women in the world with a voice that only pre-pubescent dogs can here and is in fact the only woman who could’ve rivalled Paula Abdul in the reality show judge incoherent babbling stakes.

In spite of The Daily Mail brigade whipping up another media shit storm over Alesha Dixon sashaying onto the judging panel, ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ remains the finest reality show on the box and I for one can’t wait for it to return so I can drunkenly start doing lame impressions of Len Goodman and Brendan Cole and yelling at the TV at how good or shockingly awful the contestants are.

So without further ado, here is my rundown of this year’s contestants:

The Men:

Joe Calzaghe – early favourite with the bookies for some bizarre reason. Lovely bloke who should win over a great deal of people with his charisma and given his boxing background should be especially quick with his feet.

I can only assume this is why he has shot to the top of the betting, after all Floyd Mayweather Jnr. was a revelation on the American alternative ‘Dancing with the Stars’ – but Calzaghe is no Mayweather and has a rather bulky frame to move around that dancefloor.

I think he is very much worth taking on in the betting because 4/1 which he is as low as is quite frankly a ridiculous price. He should do well, don’t get me wrong, and barring him dancing like Lurch from ‘The Addams Family’ he should still be around as the numbers start to dwindle but, as much as I’d like to see it, I don’t think he’s your winner.

Prediction: Narrowly misses out on the Semi-Final

Ricky Whittle – the former Ryan Naysmith on the brilliantly rubbish ‘Dream Team’ and the current Calvin something or other on ‘Hollyoaks’, Ricky Whittle should do well thanks to the heart-throb vote.

Flash a bit of chest and you’ve won over 90% of the voting demographic, men always do well on ‘Strictly’ thanks to the strong female voting contingent and Whittle also seems to be a rather nice guy too, which should definitely help, because after all ‘Strictly’ is a popularity contest (read, Chambers, Tom)

Apparently Whittle had professional dance training along with his ‘Hollyoaks’ buddies for ‘Let’s Dance for Comic Relief’, and I don’t recall him being terrible on that show so he could be a good bet to go far – I definitely see him as a more worthy favourite than Calzaghe.

Prediction: Last man standing

Richard Dunwoody – I’d love to see Dunwoody win ‘Strictly’ but I think there’s more chance of Josef Fritzl winning it to be honest.

The retired jockey is a lovely man who is still fitter than most of his much younger opponents and if his extensive charity work counts for anything he should have some good karma that may help stick around a while.

I think his personality could catch on with people if given enough time to come through and he is seriously dedicated - he’ll train harder and longer than anyone.

Sadly though, I just feel that he is slightly too old and coming from a sport that no one who watches ‘Strictly’ (other than me) gives a shit about will probably see him, unfairly, gone before some of the worse dancers with better sob stories/more public exposure.

Prediction: Out by Week 5

Rav Wilding – the first of the who? brigade for me. Being a supposed TV blogger, I probably should have heard about this guy before he signed on for ‘Strictly’ given that he hosts ‘Crimewatch’.

But given the fact that I don’t enjoy being scared witless before bed every night I have never watched an episode of ‘Crimewatch’ and don’t intend to. Wilding also apparently does bits on ‘The One Show’, making him this year’s token ‘One Show’ entrant – when’s Chiles going to step up?

Supposedly popular with the ladies and being well known to a BBC audience, will no doubt see him lasting longer than he deserves to.

Prediction: Will last longer than he should, but could be the men’s best hope beyond Calzaghe and Whittle.

Phil Tufnell – I get the feeling that old Tuffers is just crossing reality TV shows off a list, it wouldn’t surprise me if he turned up as a contestant on next year’s ‘Big Brother’.

He’ll instantly win the viewers over with his larger than life personality, but will probably be more lifeless than Craig Revel-Horwood’s face when he gets on the dancefloor.

Tufnell could be this year’s John Sergeant, although his cricket background could be significant as sportsmen do tend to do well on ‘Strictly’, especially cricketers (if you can class cricket as a sport that is – I’ll await your hate mail) just look at past winners Darren Gough and Mark Ramprakash.

I think Tufnell will be around long enough to entertain us but won’t make too much of an impact on the leaderboard.

Prediction: Out by Week 7

Craig Kelly – Step forward who? number 2. I have no idea who this guy is and even as I’m typing I’m having to google him to remember whether he’s the one from ‘Coronation Street’ or whether that’s Chris Hollins (who? number 3)

Kelly IS in fact the guy from ‘Corrie’, in which he plays factory boss Luke Strong. He has also been seen in ‘Queer as Folk’ and doing various narration gigs across the four main terrestrial channels.

Will probably do okay on the strength of the ‘Corrie’ vote, and if he can move could surprise a lot of people. I don’t know enough to draw much of an informed opinion so he’ll definitely be one to watch.

Prediction: Dark Horse. Could cause a few shocks… Then again, could go out in week 1.

Chris Hollins – the final member of my who? brigade. Hollins is another one of my unknowns who could spring a surprise.

A former footballer and cricketer, although not majorly successful at either he is now a sports journalist and broadcaster currently working for, yes you guessed it, the BBC.

In fact, I actually would love to see this guy go all the way, not for him but for the fact that he is partnered with the delectable Ola Jordan who was tragically out very early last year and we’d all like to see a repeat of the catsuit she rocked with Andrew Castle the other year. See opposite.

Prediction: Another Dark Horse who could surprise a few people. Should still be in at Week 8 at least.

Ricky Groves – Surprisingly, having never watched an episode of ‘Eastenders’ properly (apart from the old Who Shot Phil Mitchell storyline) I actually know who Ricky Groves is!

He plays lovable loser Garry Hobbs on the long-running soap, which should ensure him plenty of votes from the ‘Eastenders’ loyalists – much like Chambers last year with the ‘Holby City’ obsessives.

Groves strikes me as very much a jack-the-lad sort and his personality should see him through maybe slightly longer than he should stick around, because I have a very strong feeling that he could be a truly shocking dancer.

Prediction: Out by the end of Week 4.

The Women:

Jade Johnson – My initial tip to win, Johnson is an Olympic athlete who has won medals in long jump.

Athletes always do well and Johnson should only add to that theory, her only undoing could be her personality. Women are notoriously at a disadvantage on ‘Strictly’ because the majority of voters are in fact women who like to vote for hunky men.

I even thought that Alesha Dixon would end up losing due to this bias, but Alesha’s personality and journey won over the public, and I can’t see Johnson doing that, albeit I know very little about her.

If she can charm the viewers she could win it, but if she doesn’t she could be out sooner than she deserves.

Prediction: Runner-up

Martina Hingis – Disgraced Tennis star, who I always confuse with Monica Selles, so you can imagine my surprise when I see photos of Hingis and she’s actually quite attractive.

Another athlete and one that should have excellent footwork, she is quite low in the betting for some reason and could represent the best value.

If people can get best the drug cheat tag, which she will have to charm them into forgetting about she could spring a major surprise. She is also partnered with one of the better male dancers in Matthew Cutler which can only go in her favour because he is an extremely likable guy who could bring out the best in the Swiss Miss.

Prediction: Johnson’s biggest rival to be top female. Could make the Semis at least.

Laila Rouass – One of the token pieces of eye candy, Rouass is one of two former ‘Footballer’s Wives’ stars taking part in this year’s ‘Strictly’.

On a nice note, she is partnered with the brilliant Anton Du Beke who normally gets saddled with the dead wood, so providing Rouass isn’t shockingly awful on the dancefloor, this could be Anton’s best chance to do well.

Rouass recently appeared in ITV1’s gash dinosaur drama ‘Primeval’ so she should be plenty prepared to deal with another dinosaur in the shape of Bruce Forsyth. With an Indian background Rouass should, in theory, have some sort of aptitude for dance and she could go very well… on the show that is.

Prediction: Could go as far as Week 10(ish)

Ali Bastian – Another dose of eye candy, and another former ‘Hollyoaks’ star for this year’s line-up.

Ali Bastian moved from one poorly written, British television mainstay to another when she joined the cast of ‘The Bill’.

I think she could fill the Gemma Bissix-‘Dancing on Ice’ role of thinking she’s a lot better than she is, I see her as a definite candidate to fill the Jodie Kidd-Penny Lancaster gangly and uncoordinated role.

She could turn out to be a world-beater on the dancefloor though and surprise me and lot of people.

Prediction: Gone by Week 9

Zoe Lucker – The second of the ex-‘Footballer’s Wives’ stars to make-up this year’s line-up, Zoe Lucker played super-slut Tanya Turner on the ITV tack-fest.

Lucker strikes me as another one of those who you would expect to be quite good but is actually probably going to suck, much like her old character in that respect then.

She seems like a nice woman but I don’t think she has the charisma or the sympathy vote factor to go on a Kate Garraway style run.

Prediction: One of the first women to go.

Natalie Cassidy – Pie-faced former ‘Eastenders’ figure of ridicule, marks yet another BBC/former BBC star to be included in the line-up for this hit BBC show.

I know it’s shallow and mean-spirited but, looking at Natalie Cassidy makes me want to vomit. The thought of seeing her waddle around the dancefloor in tight revealing outfits gives me nightmares – boob job and weight loss or not.

Much like Jesse Wallace last year, Cassidy will probably go in to this thinking the ‘Eastenders’ loyalists will vote en mass and keep her in well past her sell-by date, but unless she can channel some of that Sonia Jackson sympathy vote then I think Cassidy will, thankfully be waltzing off pretty early doors, or at least I hope she does.

Prediction: Really depends how the ‘Eastenders’ vote plays out – could be gone in the first couple of weeks, or could make the final on ‘Eurovision’ style loyalist voting.

Jo Wood – Speaking of sympathy votes, we have Jo Wood. Husband and Rolling Stones legend Ronnie ditched her for a younger, Russian model, no doubt earning her the feminist vote for this year.

Doubt the power of the feminist vote? Just look at this year’s ‘Celebrity Big Brother’, how else do you explain Ulrika Jonsson winning?

Wood is striking while the iron is hot and she’ll be milking that sympathy for all it’s worth, it won’t see her win but she’ll survive far longer than she deserves to.

Her only saving grace is that she is partnered with the geniusly smarmy and obnoxious Brendan Cole, who I rather enjoy doing really bad, nasally impressions of, so for no other reason than that, I hope she sticks around for a while.

Prediction: Gone by the half-way point, but will deserve to be gone long before.

Lynda Bellingham – What can you say about Lynda Bellingham? Keep your clothes on would be a start…

Everyone’s favourite homely Mum is getting on a bit now, so props to her for giving this a go, but lets be honest she’s got more chance of coming in top on FHM’s 100 Sexiest Women poll than winning this.

She will probably be out in week one, unless she throws some serious shapes out there, but so long as she keeps her wrinkly boobies under wraps I’ll be happy.

Prediction: First woman out.

Other Musings this Week:

- ‘Jamie’s American Road Trip’ began this week and although he has a fat tongue, speaks in continuous innuendo and sounds as though he spits every time he talks, he is actually a good chef and can make quite interesting shows (when he’s not in preacher man mode).

I’ve not yet managed to catch the first instalment, but I will be doing and you should to, besides how can anyone make a boring show travelling across America?

- Can Jordan get any lower? The answer to that question is a resounding YES.

Losing the PR battle with estranged husband Peter Andre, so out comes the miscarriage… Wait that didn’t get her the sympathy she needed, so here we go – I was raped…

If she was in fact raped “more than once” then I genuinely feel a great deal of sympathy for her, but the way she has finally disclosed it is truly shameless – What’s next? Cancer? Well it worked for Jade Goddy huh Katie…

She truly is a sorry excuse for a human being.

- ‘Harper’s Island’ looks gash as. Good old BBC3, a show gets mauled by critics Stateside, pulls in little to no viewers and BBC3 signs it up. With everyday that passes I become a little more convinced that the people who run that channel are mentally handicapped.

The fact that shit like this gets rammed down our throats on the Beeb, yet brilliant shows like ‘Breaking Bad’ get hidden away on the likes of Five USA is a fucking travesty.

TV Moment of the Week:

- Bob Saget’s sleazier than sleazy reappearance on the fantastic new season of Entourage. The show just keeps getting better and better.

TV or not TV takes an extended hiatus for the rest of September as I move house and then take a much needed holiday, albeit to Las Vegas…

…TV or not TV shall return though at the beginning of October with a ‘What I Learned from Watching US TV’ Special.
